Junior Lefty Becomes Highest Draft Pick In UD History
June 7, 2011
DAYTON, Ohio – Cameron Hobson became the highest draft pick in Dayton history after the Seattle Mariners selected the junior left-handed pitcher in the 11th Round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive season the Crawfordsville, Ind., native has been selected in the MLB Draft after getting picked up in the 37th round by the Yankees in 2010. Hobson ended his junior campaign at Dayton as the program’s career leader in strikeouts with 256 after becoming the first player in program history to record over 100 strikeouts in a single season (105).
Hobson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team after tossing a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts and just one walk on May 25 against Xavier. For another (seven-inning) complete-game shutout against Siena on March 18, in which he threw a career-high 14 strikeouts, Hobson was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week and one of the "Louisville Slugger's" National Players of the Week.
Hobson’s 11th-round selection is the highest of Dayton’s first 13 prospects to be selected in the draft. The previous highest was the Washington Nationals’ 12th-round selection of Craig Stammen, who was recently called up to the majors last weekend.
The 2011 MLB First Year Player Draft continues Tuesday as teams select through round 30. Rounds 31-50 will be conducted Wednesday beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
