Muncie – The University of Dayton women's tennis team opened the 2012-13 season this weekend at the Ball State Fall Invitational. Sophomore Sammi Hornbarger and freshman Katie Boeckman were co-winners of the Fifth Flight Singles event by going 3-0 in singles.
Hornbarger won her first match 6-1, 6-0, her second 6-2, 4-6 , 10-6 and the semifinals 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. Boeckman won all three in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the first round, 6-4,6-2 in the quarters and 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Since the two teammates would have faced each other in the finals, no championship match was played.
Hornbarger and Boeckman also teamed up to finish fifth in the second flight of doubles, as did Claire McNulty and Maureen Stevens in the first flight. Freshman Carly Peck won her very first collegiate match in singles, while Peck and Erin Filbrandt won one of their three matches in the third flight of doubles.
The Flyers will compete at the Illinois State Invitational Sept. 21-23.
