Loiars With Team-High 12 Kills

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 (18-25, 25-10, 25-27, 23-25) decision at George Washington Friday night at GW's Smith Center. The Flyers move to 10-12 overall and 4-6 in Atlantic 10 play while the Colonials improve to 12-11 on the season and 7-2 in league action.

The Flyers were led by sophomore Jill Loiars with 12 kills and sophomore Jenna Jendryk tallied 34 assists and 12 digs for the double-double. Jendryk also led the team with a .250 hitting percentage on eight attempts and recorded seven blocks at the net.

Also for Dayton, sophomore Janna Krafka got under a team-high 16 digs and senior Megan Campbell tallied a match-high eight blocks. On her 21st birthday, junior Rachel Jones passed 10 digs as the third Flyer with double-digit passes.

The Colonials scored the first four points of the match before a GW serviced error earned the Flyers sideout. Campbell and Jendryk combined on the block and a George Washington attack went long to pull Dayton within one, 4-3. The Colonial lead was four again, 11-7, after a Flyer attacking error and also at 12-8.

Dayton trailed by seven, 16-9, before back-to-back kills from Jendryk and a Jendryk-Campbell block cut into the advantage. The Colonials led by as many as eight down the stretch, including at 23-15. George Washington reached set point at 24-17 and was able to take the frame at 18.

The Flyers opened the second set with a 4-1 lead and stretched it to six at 10-4 following a kill from junior Isolde Hannan and a Colonial attack error. On the strength of a 6-1 run, GW shortened the UD lead to one, 11-10, but a kill from Campbell stopped the spurt. The game was evened at 12 each and again at 13-13. George Washington took the lead at 14-13 but Campbell answered to knot the two squads once more.

There were two more ties before Dayton rallied as a GW attack error capped five-straight points for UD. With the score at 20-16 in favor of the Flyers, the Colonials signaled for timeout. Out of the break, Dayton scored three more consecutive points but George Washington shifted the momentum with its own 4-0 run. Holding set-point at 24-20, Hannan partnered with sophomore Angel Agu for the stuff to take the second set, 25-20, to even the match at 1-1.

The third set was tied at four-all but the Colonials took over the lead after back-to-back kills. The Flyers evened the set again at seven and eight points each on kills from sophomore Jill Loiars. The game was knotted again at 14-14 when GW rattled off three straight points to pull in front, 17-14. Dayton scored six of the next nine points, tying the set at 20-each.

Brown capped off a 4-1 Dayton rally with a kill to earn UD the 21-20 lead and GW wanted to talk it over. Out of the timeout, the Colonials earned sideout kick starting a 3-0 run. It was set-point at 24-22 in favor of George Washington but Dayton saved it twice to pull even at 24. After heading into extra points, GW held on for the 27-25 set victory to pull ahead 2-1 in the match.

Dayton took a three-point lead at 6-3 in the early going of the fourth set and a kill from Campbell set the score at 11-9 in favor of the Flyers. George Washington put together a three-point scoring rally to overtake Dayton at 12-11 and the Colonial lead was two, 15-13, when the Flyers signaled for timeout.

George Washington held the 21-15 advantage after a 5-1 run to stretch its lead to six. The Colonial lead was cut to two, 21-19, after 4-0 rally by the Flyers. A UD service error set up match-point for GW at 24-21 but it was saved on a kill from Loiars and again on a Colonial attack error. In the end, George Washington was able to claim the 25-23 win in the fourth set for the 3-1 match victory.

The Colonials had three players with double-digit kills on the night including Kelsey Newman with 21 to go with 17 kills for the double-double.

The Flyers return to action tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. match at George Mason.
