SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The University of Dayton men's basketball team will play in the eighth annual Puerto Rico Tip-Off next November. ESPN Regional Television, Inc. (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, announced the field today, which will be held Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 20, 21 and 23.
The field for the 2014 Puerto Rico Tip-Off will feature Boston College, College of Charleston, Connecticut, Dayton, George Mason, New Mexico, Texas A&M and West Virginia.
"This is exactly the kind of scheduling opportunity we are always looking for," UD Vice-President and Director of Athletics
Tim Wabler said. "Events like this, as well as the EA Sports Maui Invitational we are playing in next week, and the Charleston Classic and Old Spice that we have played in the past, give us multiple games against quality opponents while increasing our exposure nationally."
"I think it says a lot about our program that we are asked to play in these exempt events," Wabler continued. "We play basketball at a high level, we a known commodity for television and our fans really travel. This year's Maui field includes three ranked teams, and we are expected to have most fans there again this time around."
Games from Puerto Rico will be televised on the ESPN Family networks. Information regarding what ESPN platform (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc.) will be announced after pairings are finalized.
The tournament will showcase 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracketed-tournament format. The undefeated teams after the first two days of competition will face off in the championship game on Sunday Nov. 23.
Previous winners of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off include: Miami (FL) (2007); Xavier (2008); Villanova (2009); Minnesota (2010); Alabama (2011) and Oklahoma State (2012). The 2013 champion will be crowned on Sunday Nov. 24, at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
