KINGSTON, R.I. – After day one of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships the University of Dayton women’s team is in the lead. The Flyers lead the field with 44 points, followed by Charlotte (27.5) and Temple (26), Rhode Island (24) and VCU rounding out the top five with 21.5 points.

“We did really well in the meet today. We had an outstanding first day,” said UD Head Coach Jason Francis. “After day one, we scored the amount of points we expected. We had a lot of people step up and make the finals and they will all score for us tomorrow.”

UD took the top three spots in the pole vault and racked up 24 points for the Flyers. Junior Hanna Krizmanic (12-5.5) took first and 10 points, junior Katrina Steinhauser (12-1.5) was second for eight points, and sophomore Ashley DeMange (11-9.75) finished third, good enough for six points.

“Our pole vaulters did what we expected and they did so with relative ease,” said Francis. “Their 24 points in one event is big.”

Sophomore Becca Maj grabbed five points for the Flyers by taking fourth in the pentathlon. Fellow sophomore Katy Garcia added three points by taking sixth.

“Becca really stepped up for us and had PRs in the high jump and long jump,” said Francis.

UD had three placers in the weight throw to accumulate 10 points. Senior Renee Otte grabbed five points with a throw of 53-11.75. Senior Christine Borchers was right behind her with four points on a toss of 53-1.75, which is three feet longer than her PR from last season, and sophomore Miranda Nelson got two points with a throw of 50-8.75.

UD’s distance medley relay team of Nicole Armstrong, Paige Yaeger, Chelsey Vanhook and Katie Ollier took eighth place for one point.

A-10 Championship action continues Sunday at the URI Mackal Field House.

Sophomore Kelsey McDonald (800-meters), sophomore Lauren Clark (1,000-meters), junior Nicole Cargill (1,000-meters), junior Kassy Thomas (500-meters) and junior Noelle Tazioli (200-meters) all ran PRs to advance to the finals of their respective events. Junior Maddi Schmidt also qualified in the 60-meter hurdles for UD.

“Everyone ran out of their minds,” said Francis. “They really performed big for us today.”

In addition to the finals, other events Sunday include: high jump, shot put, triple jump, the mile run, 3,000-meter run, 4x800 relay and the 4x400 relay.
