FLYERS TAKE ALL THREE A-10 SOFTBALL ACCOLADES THIS WEEK

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference the University of Dayton softball team for their performance this past week by honoring three players with its weekly awards.

Junior catcher Kasi Vazquez was named A-10 Player of the Week, while sophomore pitcher Kayla English was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week and freshman infielder Paige Rhodes was named A-10 Rookie of the Week.

Vazquez led the Flyers to a 2-3 record this past weekend with team-highs .538 average, seven hits, a 1.154 slugging percentage, and two home runs. The Columbus, OH native also had two doubles, four runs scored, and three RBIs. Vazquez’s top performance over the weekend was a 2-for-3 outing against Valparaiso in which she had a double, a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Kayla English pitched 18 1/3 innings and picked up both of Dayton’s wins last weekend while recording a 2-1 record.  The sophomore ace pitched two complete games including a nine-inning, 6-5 win over Pittsburgh. With 16 strikeouts, English is now No. 6 on the all-time career strikeout list. 

Paige Rhodes appeared in all five games for the Flyers and recorded a .333 average and four hits. In 12 at-bats, Rhodes recorded two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. The freshman has started all 10 games for UD this season.

English was also named College Sports Madness A-10 Player of the Week as well.

The Flyers (2-8) head out to South Carolina this weekend four a five-game tournament hosted by Winthrop. Dayton opens up the competition with an 11 a.m. game against UNC-Greensboro on Friday.
