DAYTON SOFTBALL HEADS TO COMBAT INVITATIONAL

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team goes into its third tournament of the season with a 2-8 record. The Flyers are coming off a 2-3 weekend in the Hilltopper Classic, where they picked up two one-run victories over South Dakota State and Pittsburgh. Dayton will face UNC-Greensboro (11 a.m.) and Hartford (1 p.m.) on Friday. They resume action Saturday against Monmouth (1 p.m.) and Furman (5 p.m.), and conclude the weekend facing host school Winthrop (12 p.m.) on Sunday. All games will take place as part of the Combat Invitational.

SCOUTING UNC-GREENSBORO
The Spartans head into the tournament with an 11-2 record overall and eight wins in the last nine contests. UNCG’s only two losses came at the hands of Marshall and Belmont this year. Head coach Janelle Breneman is in her first year with the program.

The offense for the Spartans are hitting for a .294 average, a .362 on-base percentage, and a .440 slugging percentage. Katelyn Bedwell and Lindsay Thomas are both batting .400 and have combined for 24 RBIs, seven home runs, and 16 runs scored.

Raeanne Hanks is the ace of the staff with a 6-1 record, a 1.19 ERA and four complete games. Nicole Thomas is 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA out of the bullpen.

SCOUTING HARTFORD
The Hawks sport a 1-4 record on the season, but will come into the tournament on a win streak after picking up a 13-0 home victory over Savannah State. Hartford went winless in the Florida International Tournament to start the year.
Even though the Hawks offense is hitting at just a .248 clip, they have four players batting over .300, led by Margaret Betz’s .444 average. Hartford only has three extra-base hits (all doubles) on the season.

Junior Kaitlyn Meade anchors third-year head coach Diana Consolmagno’s pitching staff. Meade has already piled up 15.2 innings and posts an impressive 1.79 ERA. She has two complete games, while picking up the lone Hawks victory.

SCOUTING MONMOUTH
Monmouth has yet to lose a game this season, but only has three games under their belt heading into the weekend. Head coach Louis Berndt has the Hawks 3-0 in her fourth year at MU.

Through three games, the Hawks have outscored their opponents 26-1 and are hitting for a .350 average. Kate Kuzma leads the team with seven RBIs and two home runs.

Cerissa Rivera and Lauren Sulick are both 1-0 with 0.00 ERA’s in their lone starts. The Monmouth staff has only given up five hits this season.

SCOUTING FURMAN
The Paladins are 6-4 this season and coming off a pair of losses to USC-Upstate Wednesday. First-year head coach Kyle Jamieson has a young squad with only two seniors on the team.

Through 10 games, Furman is batting for a .277 average and is led by Stephanie Field, who is hitting .394 with 13 hits. Taylor Jenkins has a team-high seven RBIs and four extra-base hits.

The pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.52. Meaghan Houston is leading the way with a 2.18 ERA and a 3-1 record.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
The Eagles are 4-7 on the year under the direction of head coach Mark Cooke, who is in his 23rd year with the program. Together, Winthrop has picked up wins over Western Illinois, Samford, and Elon.

The offense for the Eagles is hitting for a .223 average, led by McKensi Corn’s .344 mark. Chelsea Schoenfeldt is leading the team with eight RBIs and two home runs as well.

Sutton Watson leads the pitching staff with a 4-1 record, five complete games, 24 strikeouts, and a 1.37 ERA.

HILLTOPPER CLASSIC HONORS
After competition at the Hilltopper Classic in Bowling Green, Dayton had two players named to the All-Tournament team in junior catcher Kasi Vazquz and sophomore pitcher Kayla English. Together, they helped the Flyers win games against South Dakota State and Pittsburgh.

SWEEPING THE A-10
On top of the all-tournament accolades, Dayton had a trio of players recognized by the conference for their performances last weekend. English was named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, while Vazquez was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.  Freshman infielder Paige Rhodes picked up Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors as well.

ENGLISH HONORED BY CSM
Sophomore pitcher Kayla English was also recognized by College Sports Madness as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Monday for her efforts this past weekend.

ADDING TO THE TOTAL
English recorded 16 more strikeouts last weekend in Bowling Green, moving her to 37 on the season and 171 on her career. That now puts her in 7th all-time in Dayton history.

WHERE THEY STAND
After two weeks of play, Dayton currently ranks seventh in the conference in batting average (.216), sixth in team ERA (5.51), and eighth in fielding percentage (.935).

IN THE A-10 RANKINGS
The Flyers have a number of players ranked in the top 10 in the conference statistically. English leads the A-10 in innings pitched and strikeouts. Maloof is fifth in hits, second in home runs, and leads the league in total bases.

UTILIZING DEPTH
The Flyers have started 13 players in the field this season already, and have used 17 players total.  Coach LaPlaca feel the depth of the team allows her to use the newcomers and freshmen in multiple situations.

CHASING OTHER RECORDS
Maloof is not only chasing the runs record, but also the home run record. With 24 career bombs, the senior outfielder is just 17 shy of 2012 senior Lauren Nacke’s total of 41. On top of that, Maloof is two doubles shy of owning the career doubles record, 40.
