DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer program has released its schedule for the upcoming 2013 campaign.
Head coach Dennis Currier is excited to get the Flyers back on the field for the fall season.
"It was challenging putting together a schedule this year with so much conference re-alignment," Currier stated. "It changed several times over the course of the year. We face several teams we have not seen in the past which always creates challenges. There is so much parity in Division I soccer so we will need to take one game at a time and try to build our confidence through wins. We want to be playing our best soccer by October."
The Flyers will open up the 2013 season on Aug. 20 in an exhibition at Kentucky. Another preseason game at Detroit will take place on Aug. 24 before the regular season gets underway at IPFW on Sept. 1.
Dayton's first home game will be part of the Dayton Tournament on Sept. 6 when it hosts Northern Kentucky. That Sunday, Sept. 8, Dayton wraps up the home event with a contest against Lipscomb.
Following their home tournament, the Flyers will head to the Missouri State Tournament with games against Western Illinois (Sept. 13) and Detroit (Sept. 15).
"Tournament play is a critical time for teams to gel ," said Currier. "We will have our first opportunity at Dayton early in September when we host our annual Dayton Classic. Our next chance will be at Missouri State the following weekend."
In the middle of the 2013 campaign, Dayton will travel to Ohio State for an in-state battle on Sept. 20. From there, the Flyers play six straight home games, including contests against IUPUI (Sept. 22), Loyola-Chicago (Sept. 28), Valparaiso (Sept. 30), and Incarnate Word (Oct. 4).
Amidst that home stand, Dayton will begin the Atlantic 10 season with George Washington (Oct. 11) and Fordham (Oct. 13) in the friendly confines of Bajuan Field.
"We have been very successful at Baujan Field," stated Currier. "We felt it was imperative that we play as many home games as possible to prepare for the A-10 Tournament.
A road match at Saint Louis follows on Oct. 19 before the Flyers host Duquesne (Oct. 25) and St. Bonaventure (Oct. 27) in the final home games of the regular season for Dayton.
The Flyers end the season on the road at LaSalle (Nov. 3), at UMass (Nov. 8) and at Rhode Island (Nov. 10).
One thing Dayton does have in its favor though is that the University of Dayton will host the 2013 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championships at Baujan Field, from Nov. 13-17.
"The A-10 Tournament has always been the main goal to achieve," Currier asserted. "For this group of seniors, it will have more meaning than any other season they have played here. We have been talking about it since the end of last season."
