DAYTON, Ohio - In its second match of the 2013 Flyer Classic, the University of Dayton volleyball team picked up with 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 27-29, 25-21) win over the visiting Western Michigan Broncos Saturday night at UD's Frericks Center. Senior Megan Campbell led the Flyers with a career-high 19 kills while hitting at a blistering .543 (19-0-35) clip. With the win, Dayton improves to 5-6 on the year while Western Michigan falls to 7-6 overall.
Also for the Flyers, sophomore Jill Loiars recorded a career-high 13 kills to go with her career-high-tying seven blocks while sophomore Jenna Jendryk posted UD's only double-double of the night with a career-high-tying 48 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Aubreigh Applegate passed a career-high 12 digs and sophomore Janna Krafka was also in the double-digit digs category with 17.
For the match, UD hit at .209 to WMU's .190 and the Flyers tallied 62 kills to the Broncos' 58.
Despite falling behind 4-2 early in the first set, the Flyers rallied to pull even with the Broncos, 5-5, on an assisted block from senior Shayne Brown and sophomore Angel Agu. The set was even at 13-13 but UD was able to take over the lead, 16-14, with a 3-1 run. Loiars scored Dayton's 20th point for yet another tie and followed that with an assisted block alongside Agu.
Back-to-back kills from Agu gave UD the 23-20 advantage and a Bronco ball-handling error set up game-point for the Flyers at 24-22. Agu was strong at the net again for Dayton, earning the first-set win, 25-22, with an assisted block alongside Loiars. Agu's six kills on the night was a career high.
A Western Michigan kill gave the Broncos the 7-4 lead in the second set and the WMU advantage was four, 9-5, when the Flyers took a minute to talk it over. The Bronco lead stretched to as many as seven, 17-10, but the Flyers put together a 7-1 run to pull within one, 18-17. A Western Michigan ball-handling error earned Dayton the lead at 20-19 but the set was tied again at 22-22. A kill from Campbell set up game-point for UD and WMU's attacking error earned the Flyers the 25-22 win in set two.
The third set was tied at 2-2 when the Flyers were able to go up, 6-3, on the strength of a 4-1 run. Junior Isolde Hannan partnered with sophomore Alaina Turner for an assisted block that was followed by a WMU attacking error to set the score at 9-5 in favor of UD. The Broncos called for a timeout but out of the break, the Flyers were able to open up set three to a seven-point, 14-7, advantage.
WMU continued to battle, pulling to within four, 15-11, and then shaved the UD lead to two, 18-16. The 5-0 Western Michigan run was halted with a Hannan-Loiars block and Brown followed with a kill for the 20-16 Dayton lead. With the match on the line, the Broncos continue to fight to stay in the game, knotting the two squads at 24-each. With the tables turned, WMU held its third set-point at 28-27 and earned the extra-point win in the third set.
Dayton jumped out to the 5-2 lead in the fourth set but Western Michigan tied it at 5-5 with a kill from Ave Stout. The Flyers held the 10-9 lead but a 6-1 Bronco run put Western Michigan up, 15-11. Three consecutive Bronco attack errors earned the Flyers the 18-17 lead and then the advantage was pushed to four, 21-17. Hannan's kill set up match-point for UD at 24-20 and Campbell sealed the win, 25-21, as the Flyers took the match, 3-1.
The Broncos were led by Claire Gerwig with 15 kills, one of three Broncos with double-digit kills. Lexie Pawlik posted the team's only double-double with a match-high 54 assists and 17 digs.
The Flyers return to action Sunday afternoon when they wrap up play at the 2013 Flyer Classic against Wright State. First serve at Frericks Center is set for 2 p.m. and admission is free.
