COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's track and field team competed at the Buckeye Classic in Columbus Friday and had a strong showing overall.
Dayton got the 2014 season off and going at the event hosted by Ohio State. The Flyers went up against tough competition, but held their own in all of the events.
"Overall it was a great meet for us," said head coach
Jason Francis. "The coaches couldn't have asked for a better way to start the season off. Everyone was able to come away with some very positive performances. It gives us momentum moving forward that we can build on as we get ready for the Atlantic 10 meet in the next five weeks. We are very excited about the performances we had today and how everyone competed. Even the events that didn't have very strong competition, we still competed hard, which is all we can ask for week in and week out from the ladies."
Hanna Krizmanic took first overall in the pole vault with a 3.80m performance, which is in the top five all-time at Dayton.
Ashley DeMange was close behind with a 3.65m showing, earning second place.
Katie Ollier also had a great showing in the mile run, finishing with a personal best 5:05.88 and taking third place. Nicole Armstrong had a top 10 finish in the mile as well.
In the women's weight throw,
Miranda Nelson finished fifth with a throw of 16.68m, setting a new personal record. She also took third in the shot put with a 12.95m mark.
In the 60m hurdles,
Jordan Hoffman finished fourth with a time of 8.83, earning her a spot in the finals. It was a personal record for the sophomore. In the finals, Hoffman finished sixth overall and recorded a Top 5 all-time performance for Dayton.
Maya Pedersen finished fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 57.64.
In the 600m run,
Chelsea VanHook took first place and posted a time of 1:38.03, which is the third best mark in school history and a personal best.
Kassy Thomas finished second in the event with a 1:40.54 performance as well.
Rebecca Maj and
Sydney Riethman both posted a 5.05m mark in the long jump to lead the Flyers in that event, recording a pair of Top 10 finishes. Maj and
Katy Garcia also set personal bests in the shot put Friday.
Dayton dominated the 800m event, taking the top five positions.
Lizzie Gleason led the way with a top five time of 2:16.59.
Nicole Cargill and
Olivia Albers (PR) had strong times as well.
In the high jump,
Juliana Lawniczak finished third with a 1.58m performance.
The 3000m run saw a third-place finish by
Mary List (10:26.49), a sixth-place finish by
Megan Collins (10:34.27), and an eighth-place finish by Bridget McElhenny (10:54.04) all of which were personal bests.
The 4x400m relay finished off the day for the Flyers and the "A" squad finished second overall. With a time of 3:58.18, the quartet of Pedersen, Paige Yaeger,
Mariah Curtis, and
Jordan Hoffman beat out Ohio State and Wright State squads.
Overall, it was a successful first meet for Dayton as it won events, set personal records, and rearranged the all-time performance list at UD.
"There were too many personal records to list, but one that stands out is
Jordan Hoffman in the hurdles who moved up to second all-time at Dayton," Francis highlighted. "The coaching staff is very excited moving forward and we are looking forward to next weekend in Kentucky."
The Flyers will travel to the Kentucky Invite on Jan. 17 and 18 in Lexington, Ky.
