Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 action with a 2-0 win over No. 19 Davidson.
The Flyers handed the nationally ranked Wildcats their first loss of the season, a big feat considering Davidson entered the game as the No. 3 team in the country according to the RPI rankings.
Both teams had trouble finding an offensive rhythm early in very cold temperatures. The first 20 minutes of the first half resulted in two shots for Davidson and one shot for UD, with neither team recording a shot on goal.
Junior
Brian Bates provided the first decent chance of the game. He took a shot off of a Flyer corner kick that landed safely into Davidson's keeper's hands. Shortly after, Dayton sophomore
James Haupt shot a long attempt from nearly 30 yards out that was saved.
The Flyers continued to find their rhythm when
Amass Amankona's attempt was gathered by the Davidson keeper. Later in the half, Dayton nearly scored when a corner kick by
Michael Frasca bounced off of a Wildcat defender. The ball was heading toward the net, but Davidson's keeper was able to secure the rebound.
The first half ended with a score of 0-0. Dayton led in shots on goal 4-0 and corner kicks 5-1.
In the second half, the Flyers built on their effort in the first 45 minutes.
Finally, all of their hard work paid off when senior
Greg Enstone's header on the cross from freshman
Dillon Nino found the back of the net with 36:18 remaining in the contest.
With 33:25 remaining in the contest, senior
Ryan Peterson's pass to grad student
Daniel Spencer set up a clear pass to junior
Kissima Bojang, who drilled the ball in the left lower corner to make the score 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Those goals would be all Dayton would need to send Davidson home with the 2-0 loss.
The Flyers recorded their first win over a ranked opponent this season and earned their first Atlantic 10 victory in the conference opener. Dayton racked up 15 shots, seven of which were on goal, while allowing just eight to Davidson.
Bojang recorded his first goal of his career while Enstone picked up his second this season. Nino, Spencer, and Peterson all recorded their first assists in 2014.
Goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer totaled four saves and earned his sixth shutout of the campaign.
The Flyers (5-3-2) will next host George Mason Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
