DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will finish up the regular season on the road this weekend with contests at La Salle Friday and Saint Joseph's Sunday. Friday's game will get underway at 7 p.m. ET while Sunday's affair is at 1 p.m. ET.
Dayton is 6-5-5 on the season and 2-2-2 in Atlantic 10 play. The Flyers are currently eighth in the conference standings, but with a pair of wins this weekend, they could reach as high as third. Head Coach
Dennis Currier is still in the hunt for win No. 100 at Dayton, and sits at 99 wins at the helm of the Flyers.
This year, the Flyers are scoring 1.69 goals per game and allowing 1.00 to opponents each contest. Dayton is led by junior
Amass Amankona's five goals and seven assists, which are both team highs. Sophomore
James Haupt has added five goals of his own while sophomore
Rafael Gamboa has contributed five assists. Junior goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer has started all 53 games since arriving at UD and has a 0.93 goals against average this season.
THE SERIESThe Flyers are 12-8-1 all-time against La Salle and 12-1-2 against Saint Joseph's. Dayton split their two meetings with the Explorers last year, including a loss via shootout in the opening round of the A-10 tournament, which was hosted by the Flyers. Saint Joe's and UD last met in 2011 when the Flyers came out on top, 3-0.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
LA SALLEThe Explorers are 6-8-2 on the season heading into the weekend, including a 2-3-1 A-10 mark. La Salle is led by Head Coach Pat Farrell, who is in his 28th year at the helm. Last season, the Explorers ended the Flyers postseason run with a shootout victory at Baujan Field. Dayton will be looking to return the favor this year.
La Salle is scoring 1.06 goals a game as a team and giving up 1.25 to opponents. Joe Farrell leads the squad with six goals and three assists while Greg Henry has contributed three assists as well. Goalkeeper Mike Kirk has played the majority of the minutes between the posts with 56 saves and a 1.19 goals against average in 13 starts. David Tuchinsky has made the past three starts though and has recorded a .714 save percentage in that span.
SAINT JOSEPH'SThe Hawks are 7-5-4 overall and 2-3-1 in Atlantic 10 action this year. Saint Joe's is coming off a win over St. Bonaventure, but was winless in its previous four matches. Head Coach Don D'Ambra is in his fifth year in charge and is looking to take the Hawks to their fourth A-10 tournament in school history.
As a team, Saint Joe's is out-scoring opponents 1.12 to 0.94 goals per game. The Hawks have a shots-on-goal percentage of .366 and 15 assists on the year. Individually, Mike Glazer and Jake Nelson have four goals each and Tim Lazorko has a team-high three assists. Goalkeeper Bobby Edwards has 46 saves and a 0.80 goals-against-average in 12 starts.
LAST OUTINGDayton is coming off a 2-1 loss to Fordham in the home finale on Sunday, the Flyers first home loss since the season opener on Sept. 5. Sophomore
James Haupt provided the lone goal for UD in the 63rd minute.
La Salle suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Duquesne on the road Sunday, ending their three game unbeaten streak. The Explorers got a consolation goal in 22nd minute, but allowed three in the first half.
Saint Joseph's picked up a 2-1 win at St. Bonaventure on Sunday, their first win in five games. The Hawks trailed early on, but got goals from Mark Colville and Jake Nelson in the second half to steal the win.
BATTLE TO THE FINISHDayton is fighting for its postseason hopes this weekend, going in as the last seed to make the A-10 tournament on Nov. 13 in Richmond, Va. Saint Joseph's and La Salle on sitting just outside of postseason spots at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively in the confence standings.
TOUGH SLATEThe Flyers have a challenging schedule in 2014, having already played teams that are currently in the Top 50 in the RPI national rankings. UD opponents that are currently ranked in the Top 40 in the RPI include Saint Louis (16), UAB (20), Ohio State (26), George Mason (28), and Davidson (33). The Flyers are ranked 59th overall in the RPI rankings.
FLYER SUCCESSThe Dayton men's program has an overall record of 457-390-76 and three NCAA tournament appearances in its history. The Flyers are also 114-79-21 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have six conference titles between the regular season and league tournament.
BAUJAN FAITHFULDayton has had outstanding crowds to help with home field advantage this season and currently ranks No. 28 in average home attendance. The Flyers are second in the A-10 in that category and come in ahead of numerous prominent programs.
ACADEMIC SUCCESSThe Flyers have been just as productive in the classroom as on the field, combining for a GSR (Graduation Success Rate) Score of 92. This total is the third best in the conference and tops in Ohio. On top of that, four Flyers have been nominated for Academic All-District in
Ryan Peterson,
Amass Amankona,
Andrew Lightner, and
Brian Bates.
DAYTON PICKED 4TH IN A-10The Atlantic 10 Conference released its preseason poll and tabbed the Flyers to finish fourth in the league behind 2013 regular season champions Saint Louis, 2013 tournament champions George Mason, and NCAA Tournament participant VCU. Dayton was picked ahead of A-10 newcomers Davidson, Duquesne, and La Salle, who eliminated the Flyers from the A-10 tournament last season.
CURRIER'S IMPACTThe head coach of the Flyers has had success at every place he has coached.
Dennis Currier is in his 10th year at Dayton and holds a career record of 287-109-41 in 21 seasons and a 99-60-29 record with the Flyers. His career winning percentage of .710 ranks fifth in the nation amongst active coaches, ahead of programs like Maryland, Stanford, UCLA, and Virginia.
UP NEXTDepending on the results of this weekend, the Flyers are hoping to compete in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship, which will be held on Nov. 13-16 in Richmond, Va. VCU will be the host for this year's conference tournament.
