DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team played its first home game of the 2014 season on Tuesday against the University of Cincinnati and suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the Bearcats.
Cincinnati jumped ahead in the top of the first with four runs on four hits.
Dayton managed to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but was unable to take advantage of the base runners.
The Bearcats added to their lead in the second, scoring eight more runs to make it a 12-0 ball game. Another run in the third pushed it to 13-0.
The Flyers' offense woke up in the bottom of the third with four runs on three hits. Sophomore
Aaron Huesman started things off with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring senior
Robby Sunderman. Redshirt freshman
Glenn Jones followed up with an RBI single to left before junior
Greg Rhude ripped a double to right-center, driving in two more runs. Dayton closed the gap to nine at 13-4.
Cincinnati got a run back in the fourth to push their advantage back to double digits. A solo home run in the fifth gave the visitors a 15-4 lead over the host Flyers.
The score remained over the next few innings as reliever
Tommy Konrad held the Bearcat bats in check in the sixth and seventh.
Cincinnati scored three more runs in the eighth, extending their lead to 18-4.
Freshman pinch hitter
Matt Poland blasted an RBI double to deep center in the bottom of the eighth in his first collegiate at-bat. That gave Dayton five runs in the contest.
It wouldn't be enough though as the Flyers fell to the Bearcats, 18-5.
Starter
Nick Gobert (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits.
Dayton finished with five runs on nine hits in the contest. Rhude led the way with two RBI while Huesman, Jones, and Poland had one apiece. Sunderman and Rhude both had two-hit games for UD as well.
The Flyers (3-11) will play at Miami (OH) on Friday before hosting the Flyer Classic this weekend at Woerner Field on Saturday and Sunday.
