Photo GalleryBRONX, N.Y. - The fifth-seeded University of Dayton softball team was eliminated from the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship by No. 3 Saint Joseph's, 9-5, in the Flyers' fourth game of the tournament Friday evening at Fordham's Bahoshy Field. Four Flyers recorded multiple hits in the team's 2014 finalé, including seniors Rachel Archer, Alysha Isaacson and Jordan Jennings.
UD out-hit SJU, 9-7, and the Hawks committed two errors as the Flyers were perfect in the field. Also with two hits in the game was junior Natalie Mariano. The Flyers end the season with several new school records, including batting average (.289) and slugging percentage (.453).
Following the completion of play at the 2014 A-10 Championship, junior Tiffany Ricks was named to the All-Championship Team.
Saint Joseph's (22-19) put up a single run in the bottom of the third after doubling in a runner from second but Dayton (27-29) answered with a sacrifice fly out from senior Dana Trotta in the top of the fourth.
The Hawks exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting off with a RBI-double and followed by a two-run homer over the left field fence. The Flyers went to the pen but, with bases loaded, a Hawk was walked in and another run scored on a fielder's choice. SJU doubled in two more runs but after another change in the circle, the Flyers were able to get out of the inning, trailing 8-1.
In danger of being eliminated due to the run rule, the Flyers fought back in the top of the sixth with four runs. After loading the bases, Jennings picked up a RBI with a single up the middle and sophomore Kennedy Haynes walked to plate freshman Gabrielle Snyder. Archer reached first on an infield single to bring home pinch runner sophomore Kirsten Bartlett and senior Kasi Vazquez collected a RBI with a sacrifice fly, pulling the Flyers to within three, 8-5.
Saint Joseph's got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to left center but Snyder struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning with no further damage. Jennings batted a two-out double in the top of the seventh, a ball that bounced off the top of the outfield fence and back into play, and senior Jenna Lopes reached on an error by the SJU third baseman. But that's where the rally would end as the next Flyer batter was retired on a fly out to end the game with the Hawks ahead, 9-5.
Junior Kayla English (17-14) was charged with the loss for Dayton after working the first 3.1 innings of the game. She struck out one, walked three and gave up six earned runs on five hits. Sophomore Emily Froment tossed an out of relief, facing five batters with three walks and two earned runs, and junior Lyndsey DIggs also worked an out, facing two batters. Snyder finished the game for UD, throwing the final two innings.
Anna Lauterbach (6-3) earned the win for Saint Joseph's as she threw five innings. She struck out one, walked one and gave up three earned runs on seven hits. Niki Carillo closed out the game for the Hawks, walking one and allowing two hits,
