DAYTON MEN’S SOCCER DROPS EXHIBITION AT BUTLER

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.
– The University of Dayton men's soccer team played its first exhibition game of the 2014 season on Sunday in a 2-1 loss to the Butler Bulldogs.

"This game allowed us to get an early look at the team and identify our strengths and weaknesses," said Head Coach Dennis Currier. "We have many new faces so it is important to learn the right combinations of players."

Butler opened up the scoring in the 10th minute with a goal by Chad Rigg. The Bulldogs went on to double their lead in the 29th minute with a goal by Joseph Bastian. That handed the Flyers a two-goal deficit.

Dayton had attempts of their own throughout the first half, but was unable to even the score before heading into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Flyer defense held off the Butler attack, staying within striking distance of the Bulldogs.

Senior Greg Enstone put Dayton the board in the 76th minute with a quality strike on the assist by sophomore Rafael Gamboa off a free kick. The goal pulled the Flyers within one but there was still work to be done in the 2-1 contest.

Despite having a few opportunities to tie the game in the final 10 minutes, the Flyers couldn't get the decisive goal and fell to Butler, 2-1.

"The first half was disappointing with too many mental errors, but I thought our team responded well in the second half and had some good moments," Currier continued. "This week will allow us to work in several areas we need to improve on."

Enstone scored his first of the season while Gamboa picked up the assist. Junior goalkeeper Chris Froschauer picked up four saves on six shots on goal. Gamboa led the team with four total shots, two of which were on target. Seventeen different Flyers saw action on Sunday, including five freshman.

The Flyers will face West Virginia on the road on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. in the final exhibition game before the regular season.
