Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Dayton men's soccer team opened the season on Saturday at Loyola Chicago with a tough 2-0 loss to the Ramblers.
"Loyola was very energetic tonight and had a great crowd behind them," said Head Coach
Dennis Currier. "We fell behind early and had to chase the game. We played poorly tonight and have a lot of work ahead of us. Our veterans need to step up and help get the team ready for our home opener next weekend."
After a successful campaign last year, the Flyers were eager to get off to a strong start, but the coaching staff was looking to see how this year's team would handle adversity on the road.
The Ramblers and Flyers took the first few minutes to get into the flow of the game, but host LUC scored in the 10
th minute, taking an early 1-0 lead. John Cappuccitti opened up his account for the Ramblers for the season.
Loyola Chicago doubled its lead in the 23
rd minute when Elliot Collier scored the Ramblers' second goal of the first half, putting the Flyers in a bigger hole.
At the break, the Ramblers continued to lead the visiting Flyers by a pair of goals.
The second half began with a similar flow to the beginning of the game with both teams jockeying for position. Shot attempts were hard to come by and rough play started to raise the foul totals. Through 90 minutes, there were 35 fouls committed between the two teams.
Dayton tried repeatedly to put one in the back of the net, but a stingy Rambler defense prevented that from happening.
In the end. The two first-half goals proved to be enough for Loyola Chicago as the Flyers fell, 2-0.
The loss is the first non-conference defeat for Dayton since 2012, after going 10-0 last season.
Sophomore
Brian Richards and senior
Greg Enstone both had two shot attempts to lead the Flyers. Junior goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer had two saves in his 90-minute effort.
The Flyers (0-1-0) will return to Baujan Field for their home opener on Friday as they host High Point in the Dayton Flyer Classic.
