VOLLEYBALL GETS 3-1 WIN OVER TOLEDO AT CSU INVITATIONAL

Loiars Gets Career-High 18 Kills, Turner with Double-Double for Flyers

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23) win over Toledo in its first match of the 2014 Cleveland State Invitational Friday evening at CSU's Woodling Gymnasium. Junior Alaina Turner led the Flyers with a match-high 20 kills to go with 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.

Junior Jill Loiars recorded a career-high 18 kills while hitting at .341 while senior Isolde Hannan tallied two solo and four assisted blocks as one of two Flyers with six blocks for the match. As a team, the Flyers tallied 13 blocks to the Rockets' three.

UD out-hit UT, .242 to .188, and the Flyers had 55 kills to the Rockets' 47. Also for the Flyers, junior Angel Agu recorded six blocks while freshman Jane Emmenecker set a match-high 42 assists to go with three kills, four digs and four blocks. Junior Janna Krafka passed a match-high 22 digs for UD.

Toledo (0-7) came out swinging, taking a quick 3-1 lead over Dayton (5-2) in the first set. Turner tied the frame at three points apiece with a kill and five ties later, the two squads were even at 9-9. A 5-1 spurt from the Flyers put UD ahead, 14-10, but a Dayton attacking error pulled Toledo within one, 15-14. Dayton stretched its lead to four, 18-14, forcing Toledo into a timeout but out of the break the Rockets rallied to even the set at 19-all. Dayton trailed one, 22-21, but rattled off four straight points to take the first set, 25-22, and the 1-0 match lead.

It was 3-1 for the Flyers in the second set and Dayton would hold the advantage through an 8-8 tie. Toledo rattled off four straight points to take a 12-9 advantage and the Rocket lead was five at 17-12. Once the Rocket advantage reached 20-13, the Flyers signaled for timeout. Out of the break, UD was able to cut into the UT lead, trailing four, 21-17, after a Rocket attack error. Toledo scored the last four points of the set to take the frame, 25-17, and even the match at 1-1.

Dayton opened the third set scoring the first four points of the frame but Toledo snuck back in to cut the Flyer lead to one, 6-5. The UD lead was three, 8-5, following a bad set from UT and three again at 12-9 on a kill from Agu. The Flyers scored six straight to open up the set, 19-11, and never looked back. A kill from Loiars gave Dayton set point and Turner killed the ball to win the frame. UD picked up the 25-17 win in the third set to go ahead, 2-1, in the match.

A kill from Turner tied the Flyers and Rockets at 3-3 early in the fourth set but UT would score three straight to go ahead, 6-3. The set was tied at eight each on a bad set from Toledo and a Rocket attack error gave the Flyers the 10-9 lead. An assisted block by Agu and Emmenecker set the score at 15-14 in favor of the Flyers and Dayton retook the lead, 20-19, with a kill from Turner. UD held match point and Turner laid down the match-winning kill to take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

Toledo was led by Alyssa Ehrhardt with 13 kills and 15 digs while Lauren Bakaitis also got under 15 kills for the Rockets.

The Flyers return to action tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. tilt against the host Cleveland State Vikings. UD closes out play at the CSU Invitational Saturday evening against Navy at 4:30 p.m.
