Box Score DAYTON, Ohio- The University of Dayton men's soccer team led most of the game against High Point on Friday, but suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Panthers after an overtime goal.
Dayton opened up the home slate with a packed house of over 2,000 Flyer faithful at Baujan Field Friday night. The crowd gave the Flyers momentum at the start of the contest.
Sophomore
Rafael Gamboa opened up the scoring in the 32d minute with a laser shot from 30-yards out that bounced once in front of the High Point goalkeeper and slid past him for the opening goal. It was Gamboa's first and Dayton's first of the season.
That lead held into halftime as Dayton controlled the tempo throughout the first half.
Going into the second 45 minutes, High Point came out of the locker room hungry and aggressive. They had multiple attempts on goal in the early stages, but the steady Dayton defense and junior goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer kept the ball out of the back of the net.
Both teams stepped up the intensity as the clock rolled past the hour mark and fouls started to accumulate on both sides.
The Flyers kept pressing forward though and were very close to doubling their lead on multiple occasions.
High Point was able to break up the shutout in the 75
th minute with a goal by Mamadee Nyepon, who converted after a series of rebounded shots fell to the forward.
The score remained 1-1 through the end of the second half without either team getting the decisive goal.
Just two minutes into overtime, the Panthers earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Austin Yearwood stepped up and curled a shot just out of the reach of Froschauer and into the net for the game-winner.
The Dayton crowd fell silent as High Point spoiled the home opener with a final score of 2-1.
The Flyers were out-shot in the contest 20-11, despite having eight shots on target. Gamboa scored Dayton's first goal of the season, unassisted while Froschauer recorded six saves. UD also committed 19 fouls in the game compared to High Point's 11.
The Flyers (0-2-0) finish up the Dayton Flyer Classic on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Detroit.
