Box Score (PDF)DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (30-28, 14-25, 25-22, 25-21) win over Bakersfield Saturday night in the team's Flyer-Raider Invitational finale. Junior Alaina Turner recorded her second double-double of the day with a career-high-tying 22 kills and 14 digs while freshman Jane Emmenecker tallied her first career double-double with a career-high 47 assists and 12 digs for the Flyers.
Also for UD, junior Jenna Jendryk posted a career-high 16 kills, hit at a blistering .467 and added four blocks. The Flyers out-hit the Roadrunners, .268 to .240, but CSUB had 60 kills to UD's 57.
Dayton (4-2) scored the first two points of the match but a UD attack error put Bakersfield (2-5) on top, 5-4, in the early going. Back-to-back Flyer kills set the score at 9-8 in favor of UD but the seesaw of a set continued to go back and forth. A 3-0 Dayton run gave the Flyers the 15-12 lead and Bakersfield signaled for timeout.
The Roadrunners overtook the Flyers at 19-18 on the strength of a 4-0 run but UD got the advantage back at 21-20 on a kill from Jendryk. Dayton faced set point three times before turning the tables on Bakersfield with an assisted block from senior Isolde Hannan and Jendryk. On the sixth set-point of the frame, a Runner attacking error earned the Flyers the 30-28 first-set win.
A 4-1 start for Dayton in the second set was capped by a Jendryk solo block but two kills from CSUB's Danika Youngblood and a Flyer attack error evened the score at 5-5. A Bakersfield kill put the Runners ahead, 13-9, and the Flyers trailed by five, 17-12, after consecutive CSUB kills. Freshman Amber Erhahon broke up a 4-0 Bakersfield spurt but the Runners controlled the rest of the set evening the match at 1-1 with the 25-14 win.
The third set started the same as the second with a 4-1 Flyer lead but the two squads found themselves knotted at seven points each. After four more ties, consecutive Roadrunner errors but UD up two, 13-11. The same happened for Bakersfield as UD committed back-to-back errors, giving CSUB the 16-14 advantage.
A kill from Jendryk tied the set at 18-18 and the Flyer lead was three, 23-20, following a kill from Turner. UD reached set point at 24-21 and took the third game, 25-22, thanks to another Turner kill. With the third-set win, Dayton took a 2-1 match advantage.
Bakersfield started strong in the fourth set, jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead and the Runners were up three, 8-5, after a CSUB assisted block. It was a Hannan-Jendryk assisted block that equalized the set at 9-9 and a bad Runner set gave the Flyers their first advantage of the frame, 10-9. On the strength of four kills from Turner, a 5-0 UD run pushed the Flyers ahead of the Runners, 17-14, and Dayton never relinquished the lead. The Flyers went on to take the fourth frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
The Runners were led by Molly O'Hagan will 21 kills and Mariah Alvidrez with a match-high 19 digs.
The Flyers return to action next weekend as they travel to Cleveland for the Cleveland State Tournament Sept. 12-13. Dayton will face Toledo Friday at 4:30 p.m.
