Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's soccer team ended the weekend on a positive note, picking up a 3-0 win over Detroit.
Dayton took little time to jump ahead of the Titans as sophomore
James Haupt scored a header from the penalty spot off a corner kick by sophomore
Rafael Gamboa in the third minute of the contest. That was Haupt's first goal of the season while it was Gamboa's first assist.
The Flyers quickly doubled their lead in the 12
th minute as junior
Amass Amankona cut a pass back across the box where sophomore
Brian Richards was ready to slot the ball home for his first goal of the year. Dayton was out to an early 2-0 lead.
In the 32
nd minute, Richards made it a 3-0 contest with his second goal of the game off the assist by Haupt. Haupt dribbled up the middle of the field and slid a pass in-between a pair of Detroit defenders to a perfect run by Richards for the goal.
At the break, Dayton held a commanding lead, 3-0, over the Titans. With 10 total shots, the Flyers had 7 shots on target, including a pair from both Richards and Amankona. Detroit only had four total shots at the half, with only one on goal.
The Flyers came out of the locker room and once again took control of the tempo. Dayton continued to press and push the pace of the game.
The second half was just as intense as the first half, but the defenses won the battle in the last 45 minutes.
In the end, Dayton picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Detroit, ending the Dayton Flyer Classic.
The Flyers out-shot the Titans 17-7 in the contest and had 10 shots on target. UD also committed 18 fouls as well.
Richards picked up goals No. 1 and No. 2 for the year while Haupt got his first goal and an assist. Gamboa,
Lalas Abubakar, and Amankona also contributed assists. Goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer had two saves. The entire defense was solid for the Flyers as they recorded their first shutout of the season.
Dayton's Amankona and
Brian Richards were named to the All-Tournament team. High Point was the champions and had the overall MVP, Mamadee Nyepon.
The Flyers (1-2-0) will head back out on the road next weekend at the UAB Tournament in Alabama.
