DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team opens the Atlantic 10 season on the road at Duquesne this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh.
SCOUTING THE FLYERSDayton is 5-4-1 this season, including a 2-2-1 road record entering A-10 play. The Flyers were unbeaten in their last three contests prior to the loss at Ohio State last weekend, but Dayton has been on the offensive, outscoring opponents 11-1 during that undefeated stretch.
The Flyers are averaging 2.10 goals per game and holding opponents to 1.20 goals each contest. Dayton is out-shooting opposing squads 15.1-11.6 and has an advantage in corner kicks and shots-on-goal percentage.
Senior
Amass Amankona has led the way this season with six goals, three assists, 15 points, 13 shots on goal, and a .650 shots on goal percentage. Fellow senior
Maik Schoonderwoerd has added four goals to go with his team-high four assists. Junior
James Haupt has three goals as well. Between the posts, junior goalkeeper
Justin Saliba has allowed 1.09 goals per game along with a .679 save percentage and three shutouts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
DUQUESNEThe Dukes head into conference play with a 2-5-1 record overall and are looking for their first win at home this season (0-3). Head coach Chase Brooks is in his third year at Duquesne and spent four years previously as an assistant coach at Dayton from 2007-10 under Coach Currier.
As a team, Duquesne is averaging 0.88 goals per game and allowing 1.12 goals, despite out-shooting its opponents 11.8-11.4. The Dukes have a 56-33 corner kick advantage and ranked second in the A-10 in fewest goals allowed.
Ontario-native and senior Colin Phillips has been the leader of the offense thus far with four goals and an assist, totaling nine points in eight games. Freshman and fellow Canadian-import Noah Mehta has contributed two assists as well, a team-high. Senior goalkeeper Sam Frymier has a 1.09 goals against average and a .800 save percentage in six starts, including two shutouts.
Duquesne has eight international players on its roster, with players from Europe, Canada, and South America.
THE SERIESThe Flyers and Dukes have met 16 times in the series history with Dayton taking nine wins compared to Duquesne's seven. In the last meeting in 2013, UD recorded a 1-0 victory at home thanks to a goal in the 74th minute. Six of the current Flyers appeared in that game for Dayton.
LAST OUTINGDayton suffered a 2-0 defeat to in-state foe Ohio State last Friday, ending a three-game unbeaten streak for the Flyers. A goal in each half sent UD to its fourth loss of the season as the Flyers were shutout for only the second time in 2015.
Duquesne is coming off a 1-0 loss at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, the Dukes' second straight defeat. Duquesne lost in its fourth shutout of the season after a 64th-minute goal by the Red Flash.
LEADING THE WAYThe Flyers rank first in the Atlantic 10 in multiple categories. Dayton leads the conference in shtos (15.10), points (6.10), goals (2.10), corner kicks (60), and assists (1.90) each game. UD also allows the fourth fewest goals (1.20) and ranks second in shutouts (3).
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGEDayton has scored 10 goals over its past two home games, including a 6-0 win over Bowling Green in its last contest at Baujan on Sept. 23. The Flyers are 3-1 in games at home as well, outscoring opponents 14-3.
OFFENSIVE POWERHOUSEThe Flyers have been a force on the offensive side of the ball this season, ranking in the Top 15 in numerous statistical categories. Dayton currently ranks seventh in Division I in total goals on the season. The Flyers also rank eighth in points and 15th in assists.
AMANKONA NAMED C0-PLAYER OF THE WEEKDayton fifth-year senior
Amass Amankona was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 21 after totaling seven points on three goals and an assist during a two-game stretch for the Flyers. Amankona now leads the A-10 in points (15), and goals (6), ranking 13th and 15th in the nation in those respective categories.
DAYTON PICKED 6TH IN A-10The Atlantic 10 Conference released its preseason poll and tabbed the Flyers to finish sixth in the league. Dayton finished last season as the No. 6 seed in the A-10 Tournament and was picked to repeat that feat this year. Saint Louis was chosen as the favorite going into 2015, followed by reigning conference champion Rhode Island, George Mason, and VCU. Davidson was picked to finish just ahead of Dayton.
UP NEXTThe Flyers will stay on the road for their next contest as they head to No. 23 Saint Louis on Wednesday, Oct. 7 for an 8 p.m. ET contest. The next home game for Dayton will be on Oct. 10 against A-10 foe Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m.
