DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will travel to Fairfax, Va. on Wednesday to take on Atlantic 10 foe George Mason at 7 p.m. in conference action.
SCOUTING THE FLYERSDayton is on a hot streak as of late, losing just once in the last six contests. The Flyers have won the last two contests in the final minutes of the game, improving their A-10 mark to 2-0-0. Overall, UD is 7-4-1 on the season and 4-2-1 on the road. The Flyers currently sit fourth in the conference standings after postponing their Saturday game versus Saint Joseph's due to travel issues by the Hawks.
The Flyers are averaging 2.17 goals per game and holding opponents to 1.25 goals each contest. Dayton also out-shoots opponents 16.2 compared to 11.5 and has an advantage in corner kicks and shots on goal percentage.
Senior
Amass Amankona continues to lead the offense with his six goals and 15 points to go with three assists. Junior
James Haupt has added five goals and two assists while senior
Maik Schoonderwoerd has four goals and a team-high four assists. In the past two games, senior defender
Carlos Sendin has two goals in the final minutes of the the contests, both game-winners. Goalkeepers
Justin Saliba and
Oliver Hansen have split time between the posts, combining for 35 saves and a .700 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
GEORGE MASONThe Patriots enter the week with a 4-6-1 record overall and an 0-1-1 A-10 mark. George Mason is 3-3-1 at home this season, but currently on a three-game winless streak. So far in 2015, the Patriots boast wins over Howard, Fairleigh Dickinson, High Point, and Longwood. Head coach Greg Andrulis is in his 11th season at the helm.
As a team, George Mason is scoring at a rate of 1.09 goals per game and giving up 1.27 goals each contest to opponents. The Patriots are being outshot 11.9 to 13.8, but have a corner kick advantage, 52-51.
Individually, five different players have two goals each, with seven total goal scorers this season for GMU. Freshman Stephen Durbin and senior Brice Colcombe are tied for the team lead with two assists, while junior Steffen Kraus has seen eight games in goal with 33 saves and 1.58 GAA.
THE SERIESThe Flyers and Patriots have met twice in the series history with George Mason winning once and a draw in the other contest. Last year, the game in Dayton ended with a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
LAST OUTINGDayton picked up a huge 3-2 overtime victory at Saint Louis last Wednesday, against a Billiken team that had been ranked throughout the season. Sendin scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute while Haupt and freshman
Kennedy Nwabia provided the other crucial scores.
George Mason dropped a 1-0 decision on the road at George Washington Saturday in A-10 action. A 30th-minute goal by the Colonials kept the Patriots winless in conference play.
LEADING THE WAYThe Flyers rank first in the Atlantic 10 in multiple categories. Dayton leads the league in shots (16.17), points (6.25), goals (2.17), assists (1.92), and corners (6.33). Individually, Schoonderwoerd is fourth in shots while Amankona,
Tommy Harr, and Haupt rank in the Top 10 as well. Schoonderwoerd is also tied for the league-lead in assists.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGEDayton has scored 10 goals over its past two home games, including a 6-0 win over Bowling Green in its last contest at Baujan on Sept. 23. The Flyers are 3-1 in games at home as well, outscoring opponents 14-3.
OFFENSIVE POWERHOUSEThe Flyers have been a force on the offensive side of the ball this season, ranking in the Top 15 nationally in numerous statistical categories. Dayton currently ranks fourth in goals and third in points while ranking 10th in total assists and 16th in shots per game.
PRESEASONThe Flyers totaled seven goals in Dayton's two exhibition contests against West Virginia and Butler, after scoring 30 all of last season. Dayton's leading scorer in the preseason was Schoonderwoerd, who scored three times, while
Carlos Sendin and
Tommy Harr added two apiece. That spreads the Flyers' scoring out across all three areas of the pitch, forwards, midfielders, and defenders.
UP NEXTThe Flyers will return home to host La Salle (5-7-1, 1-2-0 A10) at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field. The Explorers meet VCU midweek before traveling to Dayton to take on the Flyers.
