DAYTON -- The University of Dayton football program recently hosted the 15th Annual Tony Ernst Memorial Golf Outing at the Golf Course of Yankee Trace near Dayton.

Ernst, a former quarterback who wore No. 6 and was a 1995 UD graduate, passed away unexpectedly just a few years after his graduation. As a tribute to his spirit and character, the Ernst Family established the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Internship Position in 1999. The position is funded by the annual memorial golf tournament.

"It was another successful Tony Ernst Golf Outing. We had 120 golfers participate, and that shows the support from people in the community and former players," said Coach Rick Chamberlin.

Of the 120 golfers, 60 were former players.

More than 20 members of the 1980 National Championship team were in attendance to mark the team's 35th anniversary.

Players from the 1980 team that attended the golf outing included: Doug Conley, Nick Cugliari, Gareth Dickey, John Harris, Mark Herr, Al Laubenthal, Tim Malley, Lon Marino, Jim Pearson, Fred Proesel, Clay Robison, Breese Roller, Mark Schmitz, Tim Tepe, Dave Terkoski, George Twardy, Paul Vollman, Jon Vorpe, Eddie Voyles.

Coaches from the 1980 team that were in attendance included: Chamberlin, Mike Kelly, and Dave Whilding.

The golf team of former Flyer tight end Ty Camacho, Ryan Stitsinger, Matt Bruggeman, and Pat McFall won the tournament with a 17-under-par.

Offensive Coordinator Eric Evans helped organize the event and said that this year's outing raised approximately $19,000.

Since the establishment of the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Position, nearly $250,000 has been raised.

"It was a great day for the Ernst Family.  It was a great day for the Dayton Flyer football program. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and everyone had a great time," Evans said.  "We really appreciate everyone coming out and supporting our football program."
