
As the year comes to a close, there are many successes that the University of Dayton achieved during Fall 2016. The Flyers soared, earning four conference championships and two second place finishes—the only school across the country to attain this incredible accomplishment. In addition to phenomenal on-field success, the University of Dayton was awarded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 95 this year, placing the Flyers tied 26th in the nation.
Here is a look at some of the Dayton highlights from the 2016 Fall season:
Men's Cross CountryÂ
• Dayton completed a historic season—winning its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship; overachieving its predicted ninth-place finish in the preseason polls.
• Senior
Hunter Johnston, junior
Tyler Adgalanis, and sophomores
Spencer Danielson and
Chris Negri earned their way on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. Johnston and Negri were also named to the All-Academic Team.
• Head Coach
Jason Ordway was named the A-10 Coach of the Year.Â
Women's Cross Country
• The Flyers earned a second-place finish out of the 14 other Atlantic 10 schools; UD was picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll.
•
Chloe Flora was named A-10 Rookie of the Year—the first to earn that honor in Dayton women's cross country history.
•
Taylor Vernot and Flora finished in the Top 15 to earn all-conference honors. Vernot also earned A-10 All-Academic honors.
Football
• Dayton finished the year 9-2 overall, and second in the Pioneer Football League with a 7-1 conference record. In addition, the Flyers finished the season on a seven-game winning streak.
• More than a dozen players received All-PFL Honors, Academic All-PFL Honors, or CoSIDA Academic All-America Honors.
• Senior linebacker
Christopher Beaschler was named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American for the second consecutive year, and teammates
David Leisring and
Tucker Yinger were named to the second team. Â Dayton and Boise State were the only two Division I institutions with three Academic All-Americans this year.
• Beaschler was also one of 16 finalists for the 2016 National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy. The trophy, sometimes referred to as "the Academic Heisman," recognizes an individual as the top football scholar-athlete in the nation.
• Head Coach
Rick Chamberlin tied former Flyer coach
Mike Kelly with the most conference wins in league history, winning 55 in PFL competition.Â
Men's Soccer
• The Flyers made it to the second round of the A-10 Championship tournament, defeating the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.
•
Lalas Abubakar was named A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, was a Senior CLASS Award Top 30 finalist, team MVP, Â Second Team Scholar All-America, and First Team Scholar All-East Region honoree. He was also selected to take part in the 2017 Adidas MLS Combine.
• Four other Flyers were selected for all-conference honors including:
Kennedy Nwabia as a first team honoree and 2016 NSCAA Midwest Region Third Team member,
Coletun Long made the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team, and freshmen
Rok Taneski and
Federico Barrios earned All-Rookie Team accolades.
Women's Soccer
• The Flyers won their 10th Atlantic 10 Championship by defeating the No.1 seed Saint Joseph's 7-0, breaking a conference tournament record for goals scored in a single match.Â
• Junior
Alexis Kiehl had an incredible season, scoring 21 goals, first in NCAA Division I Women's Soccer. She was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team and 2016 All-Championship Team, in addition to breaking the A-10 tournament record for points (12) and goals scored (5), and being named to the 2016 NSCAA NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-America Second Team.
• Mike Tucker ended his 25-year coaching career with the Flyers, culminating with his 10th A-10 tournament championship victory.Â
• UD made the program's 10th NCAA Division I Championship appearance, falling to Ohio State, 3-2, in the NCAA First Round.
Volleyball
• Dayton volleyball finished as A-10 Regular Season champions and won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Tournament championship in five sets against Saint Louis in the finals.Â
• Seven players were placed on the A-10 All-Conference Team including
Jane Emmenecker as the league's Setter of the Year for the second year in a row. In addition,Â
Margo Wolf was named as Libero of the Year, and Head Coach
Tim Horsmon was named A-10 Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year.Â
• Juniors
Jane Emmenecker and
Amber Erhahon were both named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Midwest All-Region Team.
• The Flyers made the NCAA Division I tournament, but fell to Pittsburgh, 3-1 in the NCAA First Round. With 30 wins in 32 games, the Flyers boasted the nation's best winning percentage.Â
