SCOOCHIE SMITH NAMED NCAA.COM NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Junior Point Guard Averaged 27.5 Points per Game In Leading Dayton To Share Of A-10 Regular Season Title

INDIANPOLIS – University of Dayton junior point guard Scoochie Smith has been named NCAA.com's National Player of the Week after leading the Flyers to a pair of wins and the Atlantic 10's regular season championship.

Smith, a Bronx native who will be see a lot of familiar faces this weekend when the A-10 tournament is played in Brooklyn, averaged 27.5 points in a road victory at Richmond and a thrilling OT win at home over VCU.

He came into the Richmond game with a career high of 19 points, but he beat that in just the second half.  After scoring two points in the first half, Smith had 24 points in the second half to boost the Flyers to an 85-84 come-from-behind win.  He made eight of 11 field goals (including both three-point attempts) and eight of 10 free throws.  He also had five assists and only one turnover.

Against VCU, Smith took his career-high up to 29 points (8-17 FG, 8-10 FT) and added five assists, eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in the 68-67 overtime win.  He had 20 points after halftime (20 exactly this time) for the second straight game.  He scored the game-tying layup with 11 seconds to go in regulation and assisted on the game winner with 16 seconds left in OT.

The win lifted Dayton into a three-way tie for first in the Atlantic 10, with a 14-4 conference record.  UD enters the post season 24-6 overall, with the 19th-best RPI ranking in the country.  The Flyers earned the No. 1 seed in the A-10 tournament.   Dayton will meet either Fordham or Richmond on Friday at 12 noon ET in the quarterfinals.
