NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton senior point guard
Scoochie Smith was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week today after leading the Flyers to their fifth straight win and a 3-0 record in league play. Dayton had a pair of impressive wins this week -- 90-74 at St. Bonaventure and 67-64 at home over Rhode Island.
In a week where four UD players averaged at least 12.5 points a game, Smith averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the two games. The Bronx native had 10 assists and just four turnovers in the two games. Smith shot .542 (13-24) from the field and .500 (5-10) during the week.
Smith scored 17 points with four assists at SBU, and then in the matchup between the 1-2 teams in the A-10 preseason poll, had 21 points, six assists, five rebounds and four assists in the Rhode Island win. In the second half at Bona, Smith had 14 points to help break open a four-point game to the 16-point win...The Flyers trailed by two at halftime against URI, but Smith had 11 of his points and all six of his assists after the break.
He was also named the College Sports Madness A-10 Player of the Week.
On the season, Smith is averaging 13.9 points, 4.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals.Â
He is one of only six UD players to score 1,000 points and pass for 400 assists in his career, and is on pace to end his career as the Dayton record holder in games played. Smith and his fellow seniors are also on pace to be the winningest class in Flyer basketball history.
In addition to being one of three teams who are currently 3-0 in the A-10, Dayton is also 12-3 overall. UD plays at UMass Wednesday and at Duquesne Saturday.
