DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will take their undefeated Atlantic 10 mark out on the road to George Washington Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Flyers enter the game with a 5-5-2 record overall and 2-0-0 A-10 record.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 13th season at the helm of the Flyers, totaling 126 victories, the most in UD history. He returns a veteran squad this year with seven seniors, two of the top three goal scorers, and both goalkeepers from last season.
The Flyers lead the A-10 in shots and shots on goal per game, ranking in the Top 30 in both categories nationally. Dayton averages 1.58 goals per game and holds opponents to 1.17 goals each contest. The Flyers also have 185 attempts this season compared to opposing teams' 125.
UD is led by freshman
Thor Helgason, who has a team-high six goals and ranks second in the A-10 in scoring. Sophomore
Rok Taneski has contributed three goals and four assists while senior
Alvaro Navarro has two goals and a team-high five assists. Sophomore goalkeeper
Federico Barrios has played every minute in goal with 41 saves.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington heads into the weekend with a 4-5-2 record on the season and a 1-1-0 A-10 mark. The Colonials are 2-1-1 at home with both wins coming in their last two home games. Head coach Craig Jones is in his sixth season in charge of his alma mater.
The Colonials are being outscored by opponents 1.09 goals each game to 1.64 goals. GW is also being out-shot, percentage wise, and faces a corner kick disadvantage.
Leading the way for the Colonials is Oscar Haynes Brown, who is tied for second in the A-10 in scoring with six on the season. Brady O'Connor has provided three goals as well. Thor Arne Hofs has 10 starts and 56 saves with three shutouts.
THE SERIES
Dayton and George Washington have met 17 times previously with the Flyers winning eight games, the Colonials winning four, and five draws. The last meeting in 2013 saw UD and GW draw, 0-0 in Dayton.
LAST OUTING
Dayton remained unbeaten in A-10 play with a 3-2 overtime victory at home against Saint Joseph's Wednesday. Freshman
Jonas Fjeldberg struck in the 93rd minute, sealing the win for the Flyers.
George Washington won its last outing in overtime as well, picking up a 1-0 win at home against George Mason. Oscar Haynes Brown scored in the 91st minute to hand the Colonials their first A-10 win.
FLYERS EARN USC TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD
The United Soccer Coaches Association released their team academic award winners and named both the men's and women's teams at the University of Dayton to the list. This marks the 12th consecutive season for the men.
UP NEXT
The Flyers will return home next Saturday to host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Baujan Field. It will be the Breast Cancer Awareness Game and Pink Out night for UD.
