DAYTON -- Five-year NBA veteran and former Dayton Flyer Brian Roberts ('08) hosted two back-to-school meet-and-greets events for pre-selected students from the Dayton region on Saturday, July 29th. At each event, Roberts spoke with the students about life as a student-athlete and the importance of education. Afterwards, Roberts handed out 100 backpacks at each location and provided the students with other giveaways
The backpack program directly benefitted students who attend DECA Middle School and students who live in the Meadowlark Apartment complex in Trotwood, Ohio.
Roberts, a member of the University of Dayton Athletics Hall of Fame (class of 2017) has remained active in both the Dayton region and the State of Ohio during his nine-year professional playing career. His impact has been seen in both athletic and philanthropic endeavors.
"The backpack give-a-way is a small way for me to give back while helping make the start of the school year more enjoyable for students who might be in need and help them achieve their educational goals," said Roberts.
For the last four years, Roberts has been one of a handful of NBA sponsors of The Big Hoopla STEM Challenge and the other community events which surround the NCAA First Four and the tip-off of March Madness in Dayton, Ohio. Earlier this July, Roberts hosted a free summer basketball day camp open to the all students in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio.
"I am grateful for the Dayton community who, from the day I stepped on campus, welcomed me with open arms, supported me as a Flyer, and continues to support my career and my family," continued Roberts. "My family and I enjoy giving back to the communities which helped me get where I am today."
