DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team heads back on the road to Virginia to take on Richmond, Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. against the Spiders in Atlantic 10 action.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers lead the A-10 standings with a 7-0 league mark and boast a 14-4 record overall. Dayton is currently on an eight-game winning streak and has a 3-2 road record.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her second season at the helm of the Flyers after going 22-10 in her first campaign last year. The WBCA National Rookie Coach of the Year returns an experienced squad with three seniors, six juniors, and three starters.
As a team, Dayton leads the A-10 and ranks fourth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game while also at the top of the conference in points per game and scoring margin. The Flyers shoot 42.7 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from three point range, and 71.1 percent from the free throw line.
The Flyers are led by senior
Jenna Burdette, who averages 15.5 points and 3.8 assists per game. Sophomore
Jayla Scaife is scoring 15.0 points and grabbing 5.2 rebounds per game while senior
JaVonna Layfield is averaging a double-double with 11.8 points and 12.5 rebounds each outing.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond heads into the week with a 7-13 record overall and a 2-5 conference mark. The Spiders are 1-7 at home this season and currently on a four-game losing streak. Head coach Michael Shafer is in his 13th season in charge of Richmond.
The Spiders averaged 67.6 points per game and give up 69.9 points to opponents. Richmond is shooting 36.4 percent overall, 31.5 percent from behind the arc, and 69.8 percent from the charity stripe. The Spiders also lead the league in steals.
Leading the way is Micaela Parson, who ranks third in the A-10 in points per game at 17.4 and leads the conference in free throws made and attempted. Her freshman sister Alex Parson is chipping in 12.1 points while Kailyn Fee contributes 8.6 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton remained unbeaten in A-10 play with a 66-55 win over George Washington at home on Sunday. The Flyers shot 51 percent from the field, led by
Jayla Scaife and
Lauren Cannatelli, who scored 17 points each.
Richmond suffered a 43-38 loss at home to Fordham on Sunday, despite Micaela Parson scoring 17 points and the Spiders leading by three in the third quarter.
THE SERIES
The Flyers and Spiders have met 22 times previously with Dayton having a narrow lead, 12 wins to Richmond's 10 wins. In last year's meeting, the Flyers won at home, 55-39.
