Jordan Benjamin Defeated No. 88 Maik Steiner By A Line Of 7-5, 7-6

Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team suffered a setback to No. 31 Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 loss. The Flyers had won eight straight matches entering Sunday's contest, a feat that tied the program's all-time record for consecutive wins dating back to the 1990 season. Dayton's record now stands at 11-3 overall this season, while Western Michigan improves to 10-2.

Western Michigan gained the early advantage in doubles following a 6-2 win at No.3, but Carsten Fisher and Zach Berry responded with a 6-4 win at No.1. The doubles point went to the Broncos as they claimed a 7-6 (5) win at No.2 over Jordan Benjamin and Theo Jener to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. This was the first doubles point that Dayton has dropped thus far in the 2018 season.

Dayton battled hard at each singles match, but fell behind by a score of 3-0 after Western Michigan sealed victories at No.4 and No.5. Fisher earned the first point for the Flyers with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No.2, but the Broncos went on to clinch the match at No.3, as Berry fell by a 7-5, 6-2 margin. Benjamin was able to bring the match score to 4-2 following a 7-5, 7-6 (4) straight-set win over No. 88 Maik Steiner, giving Benjamin his first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. This victory also puts Benjamin at an undefeated 10-0 record for the dual match season. The final match of the day ended with Steven Karl falling by a score of 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-8 at No.6.

Dayton will head west next weekend and play two matches at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. The Flyers will play Air Force on Friday at 6 p.m. and then face off with Bryant in a neutral site game on Saturday at 11 a.m. Look below for full results from Sunday's match and quotes from Jordan Benjamin and head coach Ryan Meyer:

Quotes
Head Coach Ryan Meyer
"I thought we had a good, hard-fought match. Doubles came down to a tiebreaker, so we had some confidence going into singles. We were able to take care of business at the top of the lineup, but just fell short on the other courts. This match gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.  Anytime we can play a high-level match against a great team like Western Michigan gives us great momentum for the rest of the season."

Junior Jordan Benjamin on his win at No.1 singles:
"I think I had some great coaching throughout my match which enabled me to stay focused on my game and what I can control. It is always a group effort when you get a big win like this and I look to maintain this level of tennis heading into some more big matches."
