DAYTON -- University of Dayton men's basketball coach
Anthony Grant has announced that Chase Johnson, a 6-foot-9, 219-pound forward from Ripley, West Virginia, will transfer to UD from the University of Florida. Â Johnson will enroll at UD for the second semester, and be eligible next season after the completion of the first semester.
"We're excited to add Chase to our program," Grant said. "He is a talented player who is blessed with size and athleticism. He fits our style of play very well, plays multiple positions and is a competitor.
"He will join us for the second semester, which allows him acclimate academically to UD and become familiar with our system and culture. He will also be an asset to our current team with his abilities and experiences in practice on a daily basis, while continuing to develop and bond with his teammates."
Injuries limited him to six games at the beginning of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons at Florida. Â In 53 minutes played, he scored 23 points and 12 rebounds (3.8 and 2.0 averages). Â He shot .563 (7-12) from the field and seven of his 12 rebounds were offensive boards.
Johnson was rated a four-star performer coming out of high school, and ranked 85th in his class. Â He played his senior season at Huntington Prep, a perennial Top Ten program nationally. Â He averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds for Huntington Prep, and was named All-West Virginia by USA Today. Â As a junior at Ripley High School, he was named Second Team All-West Virginia after averaging 17.1 points and 8.8 rebounds a game. Â
Dayton is 9-5 this season, and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 after beating Richmond on Sunday for its fourth consecutive win. Â The Flyers are at George Washington on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
