DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team continues Atlantic 10 play at home Wednesday night, hosting Massachusetts at 7 p.m. for Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Night.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton enters the week with a 6-6 record overall and a 1-0 A-10 mark. The Flyers are on a two game winning streak and are 5-1 at home this season. UD hasn't lost a home game since No. 17 against Northeastern.
Head coach
Shauna Green is the reigning A-10 Coach of the Year and is in her third season at the helm of the Flyers. With a 51-22 record at Dayton and three conference titles, expectations are high for the program.
As a team, the Flyers are scoring 66.6 points per game and holding opponents to 60.5 points each outing. Dayton leads the league in defensive rebounding and ranks second in scoring margin, field goal percentage defense, and three-point field goal percentage defense.
Dayton has had a balanced attack this season, but leading the Flyers is junior
Jayla Scaife, with 15.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, and senior
Lauren Cannatelli, with 12.6 points and 91.1 percent free throw percentage, which leads the A-10.
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
Massachusetts comes to Dayton with a 9-6 record on the season, a 1-0 A-10 mark, and a 2-3 road record. The Minutewomen have won two in a row however and look to keep that streak alive and avenge their 30-point loss to the Flyers from last season.
Head coach Tory Verdi is in his third season at UMass, but is a 24-year coaching veteran. He has a young squad this season with only five upperclassmen, but returns multiple starters from last year.
UMass averages 65.7 points per game and allows just 61.9 points to opponents. The Minutewomen shoot 41.4 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from three, and 69.7 percent from the free throw line. UMass has a +3.1 rebounding margin on the year, but faces a good rebounding team in Dayton.
Leading the Minutewomen is junior Hailey Leidel, who is scoring 14.0 points per game, grabbing 7.4 rebounds, and dishing out 2.7 assists per game. Bre Hampton-Bey and Jessica George are also averaging double digits scoring.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton opened A-10 play with a dominating 84-45 win over La Salle at home Saturday. The Flyers jumped out to a 27-8 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back, having four players score in double digits in the game.
UMass started off its conference season with a 70-66 victory at home against Saint Louis Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen held the Billikens to just six points in the opening quarter and used that advantage to fend off a second half SLU surge.
THE SERIES
Dayton and UMass have played 25 times previously with the Flyers winning 14 contests and the Minutewomen winning 11 games. Last year's meeting took place on Feb. 7, 2018 with the Flyers winning by 30, 79-49 on the road.
THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 549 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.
FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 90 of its last 109 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.826), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.
70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 151-18 (.903) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2009-10 when reaching that mark.
