DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team continues the 2021 preseason this weekend with a pair of home matches.
The Flyers host Bellarmine Friday before welcoming Wabash Sunday at Baujan Field. Both games will kickoff at 7 p.m. ET.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is entering the season with a veteran squad under head coach
Dennis Currier, who is in his 17th year at the helm of the Flyers and the reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. UD replaces just one starter from last year's team that went on to win the A-10 regular season title with a 4-1-1 conference mark.
As a team, the Flyers averaged 2.22 goals per game last year and held opponents to 1.33 goals each outing. Dayton also out-shot opposing teams 17.7 to 14.7 per game last year as well.
Leading the way for UD is two-time and reigning A-10 Midfielder of the Year
Kingsford Adjei, who had five goals and four assists to lead the Flyers last season. Second Team All-Conference defender Harryson and All-Rookie Team goalkeeper
Marc Kouadio return to anchor the defense.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
BELLARMINE
Bellarmine comes to Dayton with a preseason win under its belt already and off a 2020 season in which the Knights went 4-4 overall and 3-1 in A-Sun play. They earned the top-seed in the north division, but fell in the first round of the A-Sun tournament to Florida Gulf Coast.
Head coach Tim Chastonay is in his 24th year as leader of his alma mater.
As a team, the Knights scored 1.13 goals per game and allowed 1.38 goals to opponents. Bellarmine out-shot opposing teams 12.6 to 11.8 and at a higher percentage.
The Knights return top scorers Juan Ballas and Haziq Zed from last season, each contributing three goals in the shortened season. Goalkeepers Matthew Brozovich and Connor Range both saw action between the posts last year.
WABASH
Wabash will face Dayton in its lone preseason game on the schedule before opening the regular saeson. The Little Giants were 1-2-1 this past season with a victory over Dayton neighbor Wittenberg in the season finale.
Head coach Chris Keller is entering his 10th season in charge of Wabash and has coached 31 All-Conference players in his tenure.
Overall last year, the Little Giants scored just two goals on the season and gave up four in four contests. They were able to record more shots per game, but fewer on target.
Senior Timothy Herring provided the scoring last season while goalkeeper Michael Bertram returns for his junior year as well.
THE SERIES
Dayton and Bellarmine have played three times previously with the Flyers winning once and the Knights winning twice. The two teams squared off last year in Bellarmine's first season in Division I with the visiting Knights winning 2-1 at Baujan.
UD and Wabash will be meeting for the first time in program history.
