DAYTON – The 2023 MLS SuperDraft took place on Wednesday with University of Dayton senior defender
Xavier Zengue selected 27
th overall in the first round by the Columbus Crew.
"Thank you to my teammates, coaches, friends, and family for making my experience at Dayton so memorable," said Zengue. "I couldn't be here without any of you so thank you so much."
Zengue becomes the second-highest draft pick ever in Dayton history and is the third straight draftee for the Flyers.
"Xavier has developed into a tremendous student-athlete over his four year journey," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "He is a symbol of what our program is about- work ethic, leadership and perception. He joins an amazing history of players going on to the next level from Dayton and we are confident he will represent our University and soccer program in the best way possible."
A native of North Oaks, Minn., Zengue was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10, Second Team All-Southeast Region, First Team All-Ohio, and Scholar All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. He finished his UD career with 57 appearances, 51 starts, two goals, and eight assists.
Zengue is the latest Flyer to be chosen in the MLS draft, joining former teammates
Kingsford Adjei (2022 to New York City F.C. – 56
th overall) and Jonas Fjeldberg (2021 to F.C. Cincinnati – 54
th overall). Prior to that Lalas Abubakar (No. 5 overall), Amass Amankona, Isaac Kissi, Dasan Robinson, Chris Rolfe, and Denny Clanton were all drafted since 2004.
