DAYTON - The University of Dayton's rowing team will kick off the 2022 season on Saturday, March 19, facing off against Marietta and Purdue at the Marietta Lindamood-VanVoorhis Boathouse.
The team goal is to medal in all the events at A-10s," said head coach Mike Wenker. "We have five seniors that worked three-plus years. They stuck with the team through the most difficult years. Two rowed in the varsity 8+ that finished third last season. Each have shown leadership this year."
The Flyers prepare to hit the water after finishing fifth in the Atlantic 10 Championships last May.
The team graduated five seniors in the spring of 2021 including varsity stars
Maggie Cahill and
Samantha Bauer. Last season Cahill was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 while Bauer was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10.
This season Dayton welcomes 13 freshmen to the team and expects a strong novice presence in upcoming regattas at Duquesne, SIRA, George Mason and Eastern Michigan.
In November, the team had their first opportunity to compete together in the Bald Eagle Regatta exhibition race. At the event, the Flyers met Grand Valley, Purdue, Northwestern, IUPUI,Marquette and Illinois. The team excelled in all heats, earning numerous top-3 finishes. The novice 8-A team took home first place in their race while varsity 4-A, novice 8-B+, and varsity 8-B all finished second.
"Overall, this is the largest team we have had in a long time," Wenker added. "Each boat will be competitive. We are excited to get back in the water and race. This is a young team with good senior leadership. Each boat will improve over the next nine weeks until the A-10 Championship."
