DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will return home to host Loyola Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads into the weekend with a 4-6-2 record overall and 2-1-1 Atlantic 10 mark. The Flyers and Ramblers are currently tied with Duquesne for fifth in the league standings.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 19th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 1.67 goals per game and giving up 1.42 goals to opponents. UD has one of the most potent shooting teams in the country, ranking first in the nation in shots per game and fourth in corner kicks.
The Flyers are led by graduate student and defender
Hjalti Sigurdsson, who has team-highs of four goals and nine points. Sophomore
Joseph Melto Quiah has chipped in three goals and two assists for eight points while senior
Ousseynou Cisse and grad student
Manny Day have three assists each. Senior goalkeeper
Dario Caetano has 33 saves and three shutouts on the year.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
LOYOLA CHICAGO
Loyola Chicago has had a successful run so far this season, sitting at 6-2-2 on the year and 2-1-1 in A-10 games. The Ramblers are unbeaten on the road this season as well at 4-0-1.
Head coach Steve Bode is in his second season in charge of Loyola and guided the team to the A-10 Championship runner-up finish last year.
The Ramblers also have an attack-minded squad with 2.20 goals per outing and allowing just 0.90 to opposing squads. Loyola is right there with Dayton ranking fourth in the country in shots per game and 11th on goal differential.
Loyola is led by Oscar Dueso with four goals and four assists on the year while Markus Maurer has contributed five goals and John Gates has added two goals and a team-leading five assists. Aidan Crawford has three shutouts and 14 saves in nine appearances in goal for the Ramblers.
LAST OUTING
Dayton went on the road to VCU Wednesday and scored a late equalizer to earn the 1-1 draw on the road. Senior
Kenji Mboma Dem's shot was deflected in for the Flyers in the 80th minute.
Loyola traveled to La Salle Wednesday and came home with a 3-0 win over the Explorers. The Ramblers struck early with a goal in the eighth minute and added two more in the second half to earn the easy victory. La Salle only had one shot in the contest.
SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Loyola have met seven times previously with the Flyers holding a 5-2 series advantage. Two two squads last faced off in 2014 with the Ramblers winning at home 2-0.
SIGURDSSON PICKS UP A-10 CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES
The Atlantic 10 released its players of the week on Oct. 2 and chose Sigurdsson as the conference co-Rookie of the Week. Though listed as a graduate student, he is eligible for the award since he has not played collegiately previously.
SIGURDSSON NAMED DAYTON MALE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK THREE TIMES
The University of Dayton Athletics Division chose its student-athletes of the week for Aug. 30 and recognized Sigurdsson as the College Sports Advantage Male Student Athlete of the Week for Dayton. He received the award again on Sept. 20 for his hat trick against Rhode Island and yet again on Oct. 4 for leading UD to a pair of wins the week prior.
