Malachi Smith, Koby Brea To Have Surgeries

Flyer Guards Combined to Miss 21 Games in 2022-23

DAYTON – The University of Dayton has announced that sophomore guard Malachi Smith and redshirt sophomore guard Koby Brea will have surgery in the coming weeks to repair injuries they played through during last season.

Smith will have reconstructive surgeries on both ankles.  The right ankle procedure will be performed on March 30, with the left ankle approximately ten weeks later.

Brea will have rods inserted in both lower legs to address stress fractures he has dealt with in his tibias for the last year.  Brea will have his surgery on Apr. 6.

Smith played in 19 of UD's 34 games last season, with 16 starts.  He missed six weeks of the preseason and the first three games of the year with a left ankle injury.  He played four games before injuring the right ankle and missing the next 11 games.  He averaged 7.7 points per game and led the Flyers with a 5.6 assist per game average.

Brea missed almost all summer and the preseason.  He saw action in one of the first seven games of the year, and then played in the final 27 games (starting the last nine).  He averaged 6.8 points and 3.3 rebounds a game.

No other surgeries are planned for any other members of the Flyer basketball team.

Dayton was 22-12 last season, and finished second in the Atlantic 10 in both the regular season and post-season championship.
