DAYTON Â -- The University of Dayton football program hosted the 21ST Annual Tony Ernst Memorial Golf Outing at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace near Dayton on Friday, June 23.
Ernst, a former quarterback who wore No. 6 and was a 1995 UD graduate, passed away unexpectedly just a few years after his graduation. As a tribute to his spirit and character, the Ernst Family established the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Internship Position in 1999. The position is funded by the annual memorial golf tournament.
The tournament featured 121 golfers, including 60 former players ranging from the Class of 2020 to the Class of 1967.  More than a dozen members of the 2001 Pioneer Football League Championship team were the featured guests of honor.  That team went 10-1 on the season, including a 46-14 win over Jacksonville in the PFL championship game.  All three team captains – Jermaine Bailey, Marty McNamara and Jeff Swanson – were in attendance.
Former Flyer quarterback Phil Nussman's group won the best-ball event. Â John Nussman, Jeff Winget and Tony Marr rounded out the foursome.
Since the establishment of the Tony Ernst Football Coaching Position, nearly $450,000 has been raised.
