DAYTON - The No. 5/7 University of Dayton men's soccer team hosts Fordham University Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinals with a spot in the title game on the line.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton remains at home in the postseason with an 11-2-3 record overall and six-game winning streak. The Flyers are the No. 2 seed in the A-10 Championship after going 5-1-2 in the league during the regular season. UD's last loss came to Fordham at home.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 20th year at Dayton and is the winningest coach in program history. He ranks eighth among active Division I coaches in career wins.
Dayton is averaging 2.88 goals per game and giving up just 1.13 goals to opponents. The Flyers are outshooting opposing teams 20.1 to 9.6 and at a higher percentage.
Leading the way for the Flyers is three-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Week
Martin Bakken with eight goals and eight assists, and ranks in the Top 5 in the A-10 in goals, points, and assists. Senior
Joseph Melto Quiah is chipping in seven goals and six assists while freshman
Andrew Armstrong has scored eight times in his debut season, including the game-winner last outing.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
NO. 5 SEED FORDHAM
Fordham entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and dominated the No. 4 seed Duquesne in the A-10 Quarterfinals last Saturday. The Rams are 8-4-5 overall and were 4-1-3 in A-10 play. Fordham was 4-2-3 away from home during the season and already has one win over UD this year.
Head coach Carlo Acquista is in his sixth year at the helm of the Rams.
As a team, Fordham is scoring 2.00 goals each contest and allowing 1.24 goals to opposing squads. The Rams are being outshot by a narrow margin, 12.6 to 12.1, but at a much higher percentage on goal, .432 to .346.
The Rams are led by A-10 Player of the Year candidate Daniel D'Ippolito who has 13 goals and seven assists on the year, including a hat trick last weekend. Goalkeeper Carter Abbott has 43 saves and four shutouts in 13 starts between the posts.
LAST OUTING
Dayton was victorious in its quarterfinal contest against Davidson last Friday, 1-0. Freshman
Andrew Armstrong scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute.
Fordham kept its season alive with a 3-0 defeat on the road at Duquesne Saturday. Daniel D'ippolito recorded the second-half hat trick to power the Rams past the Dukes.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Dayton leads the country in shots per game and ranks second in scoring offense, third in points per game, and fourth in total goals, shots on goal, and goal differential.
Individually,
Joseph Melto Quiah ranks fourth in the nation in shots per game while
Martin Bakken is 24th in assists and 27th in points.
UP NEXT
If victorious, the Flyers will move on to the A-10 Championship game for the second straight season.
