No. 5/2 Men's Soccer Hosts Michigan In NCAA 2nd Round Sunday Night

The No. 5 seed Flyers And Wolverines Battle At Baujan For A Trip To The 3rd Round

DAYTON - The No. 5/2 University of Dayton men's soccer team will host the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is the No. 5 overall seed in the tournament and holds a record of 13-2-3 on the year. The Flyers are coming off their second-straight Atlantic 10 Championship and 10th overall. This will also mark their sixth NCAA appearance in program history.

Head coach Dennis Currier is in his 20th year at Dayton and is the winningest coach in program history. He ranks eighth among active Division I coaches in career wins.

Dayton boasts one of the top offenses in the country with 2.83 goals per game and holding opponents to just 1.00 goal each outing. The Flyers lead the country in shots per game with 20.6 and rank second in the nation in goal differential, points per game, and scoring offense.

Leading the way for the Flyers is A-10 Championship MOP and A-10 Defender of the Year Hjalti Sigurdsson, who recorded eight goals and six assists with four game-winners. A-10 Rookie of the Year Andrew Armstrong chipped in eight goals and three assists while First Team All-Conference performer Martin Bakken also had eight goals and a team-high 10 assists, fifth in Division I.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
MICHIGAN

Michigan comes to Dayton with a 9-4-7 record overall and a one-game winning streak after defeating Robert Morris in the NCAA First Round Thursday. The Wolverines were 1-2-4 away from home this season.  

Head coach Chaka Daley is in his 13th season in charge and has over 100 career victories.

As a team, the Wolverines are scoring 1.30 goals each outing and giving up 1.15 to opposing squads. Michigan only averaged 9.4 shots per game and allows 11.7 to opponents, but at a lower percentage.

Powering the Wolverine attack is Second Team All-Big Ten performer Bryce Blevins with 19 points on five goals and nine assists while Beto Soto has added nine assists and three goals. Freshman defensive midfielder Kamau Brame was named All-Freshman Team for the Big Ten and Isaiah Goldson has six shutouts and 58 saves to anchor the defense.

LAST OUTING
Dayton won its second straight A-10 Championship title, this time on its home field, with a 3-0 victory over fellow NCAA tournament participant Saint Louis last Sunday at Baujan Field.

Michigan defend its home field with a 2-0 opening round win over Robert Morris Thursday night. The Wolverines had two highlight goals to move on to the second round of the tourney.

SETTING THE STANDARD
Dayton leads the country in shots per game and ranks Top 5 in points, goals, shots on goal, scoring offense, and goal differential.

Individually, Martin Bakken ranks fifth in the nation in assists and 23rd in points while Joseph Melto Quiah is fourth in shots per game.

FLYERS DOMINATE SEASON AWARDS
Dayton set a new program record with 12 individual A-10 end-of-season awards. Hjalti Sigurdsson earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, First Team, and All-Academic team while Andrew Armstrong was A-10 Rookie of the Year, First Team, and All-Rookie. Joseph Melto Quiah and Martin Bakken joined them on the First Team with Miles Bonham and Braden Seel picking up Second Team accolades. Luis Bremaud was also All-Rookie and Bakken was named All-Acadmic as well.

BAKKEN, ARMSTRONG PICK UP A-10 HONORS YET AGAIN
Sophomore Martin Bakken and freshman Andrew Armstrong earned A-10 honors together for the time this season on Oct. 21 with Bakken taking A-10 Offensive Player of the Week and Armstrong earning A-10 Rookie of the Week accolades.

SIGURDSSON NAMED A-10 OFF. PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the second straight week, a Flyer was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week as graduate student Hjalti Sigurdsson received accolades after scoring all three goals for UD against No. 9 Western Michigan and Loyola Chicago.

WELCOME TO DAYTON
The Flyers brought in 14 new players including nine freshman for the 2024 season.

A-10 RECOGNIZES FLYER DUO
The Atlantic 10 honored a pair of Flyers with weekly awards on Sept. 16. Graduate student Dario Caetano was named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week while sophomore Martin Bakken was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week.

UP NEXT
If victorious Sunday, the Flyers will host the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 30.
