DaRon Holmes II Named To Karl Malone Award Top 10 List For Second Straight Year

Malone Award Goes To The Top Power Forward In College Basketball

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – University of Dayton forward DaRon Homes II has been named to the 2024 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Top 10 List.

Holmes, who is also on the Malone Top 10 list a year ago, is just the second Dayton player on the Malone Watch List.  Obi Toppin, who won the award after the 2019-20 season, was the first.  Holmes is the first Dayton player named to the Top 10 list twice.

The other players named as semifinalists for the Malone award are Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Enrique Freeman (Akron), Graham Ike (Gonzaga), Oso Ighodaro (Marquette), Kesha Johnson (Arizona), Alex Karaban (UConn), Jaedon LeDee (San Diego State), Norchad Omier (Miami) and Great Osobor (Utah State),

A 6-foot-10 junior forward from Goodyear, Ariz., Holmes is the only player in NCAA Division I who has more than 40 blocks, 40 dunks and 40 assists so far this season.  Holmes has 44, 45 and 52 respectively.   Holmes also has 21 threes and is shooting .396 (21-53) from deep.  He had a total of seven made threes in his first two seasons at UD.

Holmes has been the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week three times (all in the month of January) and was on the USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week five-man team for the week ending Jan. 21.  He was also named the National Player of the Week by NCAA March Madness on Jan. 15.

Holmes leads the A-10 in scoring (19.4) and UD in rebounding (7.9).  He is the only player in the league's Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, FG%, 3-pt. FG% and blocked shots.

Holmes was also named to the Wooden Award Late Season Watch List, a 20-man listing of the top candidates for national player of the year.

The award is presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and named after 11-time All-NBA First Team selection Karl Malone.  It is part of the Hall of Fame's "Starting Five" awards program.  The other awards on the men's side are the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award.  All five greats are members of the Naismith Hall of Fame.

Fans are encouraged to #VoteForDeuce by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, beginning Friday, Feb. 2 here at hoophallawards.com.  The fan vote will count as one committee vote during the final selection process.

In March, five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2024 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a date to be determined,  along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five.
