WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Dayton guard
Kobe Elvis has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week after his performances in two Flyer wins over Saint Louis and VCU last week.
Elvis was the hero in overtime in Dayton's come-from-behind VCU win that clinched just the fourth time a Dayton team had an undefeated season in UD Arena history. Â He had 10 of his 15 points in the last 1:09 of the extra period. Â He drilled back-to-back treys that tied and then gave Dayton the lead for good with 43 seconds to go. Â He then made the first pair of the final five free throws that clinched the win down the stretch. Â
For the week, the junior from Brampton, Ont. averaged 18.0 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds in two UD wins, while shooting .545 (12-22) FG, .571 (8-14) 3-pt. and 1.000 (4-4) FT. Â He scored 21 points and had five assists at Saint Louis on Tuesday, and 15 and six against VCU. Â He also had a career-best three steals on Friday.
Elvis shared the honor with Darius Maddox of George Mason.
This is Elvis' second A-10 weekly honor of the year. Â He was co-player of the week after scoring 27 points in the win over Cincinnati in December.
Dayton, ranked 25th in last week's Associated Press rankings, finished the regular season 24-6 overall and 14-4 in the Atlantic 10. Â UD's four conference losses were by a total of 16 points, and the two non-conference defeats were at the hands of Houston and at Northwestern. Â
The Flyers are the No. 3 seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship in Brooklyn. Â Dayton will play its first game of the tournament will be on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET against a team that will emerge from sixth seed Duquesne, 11th seed Rhode Island and 14th seed Saint Louis.Â
