Men’s Basketball To Play North Carolina In Maui Invitational

Flyers Are 9-3 In Four Previous Appearances In Maui

MAUI, Hawai'i – The University of Dayton's fifth appearance in the Maui Invitational will begin with a first-round game against North Carolina on Monday, Nov. 25.  The game between the Flyers and the Tar Heels will open the tournament and will be played at 6:30 p.m. HT/11:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

The winner of the first -round game will play the winner between Auburn and Iowa State. The other side of the bracket will open with UConn playing Memphis, and Colorado squaring off against Michigan State. 

The tournament will continue on Nov. 26 and 27, with the championship game played at 12 noon HT/5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The games in Maui will be played at the Lahaina Civic Center.  Every game will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, and available on-line at ESPN+.  

The Flyers previously played in the 2000, 2003, 2013 and 2019 Maui Invitationals.  In 2000, UD placed  third after upsetting No. 12 UConn and No. 6 Maryland. In 2003, the Flyers won the tournament title after knocking off Central Michigan, San Diego State and Hawai'i.  Dayton placed in third again in 2013 with victories over No. 12 Gonzaga and Cal.  The Flyers placed second in 2019, losing in overtime to Kansas after versus wins over Georgia and Virginia Tech.

The 2024 Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be the 17th consecutive exempt tournament in a full-season schedule for the Flyers. 

Dayton and North Carolina have met three times, with UD holding a 2-1 lead in the series.  The Flyers won 76-62 at Freedom Hall in the 1967 Final Four.  The Tar Heels won 81-51 at the Dean Dome on Dec. 31, 2006.  Dayton took the last meeting and the 2010 NIT championship by the score of 79-68 at Madison Square Garden.

UD coach Anthony Grant and UNC Hubert Davis are two of nearly 50 NCAA Division I coaches who are the head coach at their alma mater.  They are two of the six coaches who coached their alma maters in the 2024 NCAA tournament.

Dayton returns three starters from last year's squad that posted a 25-8 overall mark and finished third in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings. The Flyers earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the second round.

Limited all-tournament and a variety of booster ticket-only packages will go on sale Friday, Aug. 23, and local fans will continue to receive their special Kama'āina ticket rate, which will go on sale on Thursday, Aug. 29. Each ticket option will be available online only starting at 10 a.m. Hawaiian time/3 p.m. Eastern time.
