WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has recognized University of Dayton freshman Simone Bessong as Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season.
The Florence, Kentucky native has had a phenomenal freshman indoor season thus far, and that breakout continued this past weekend at the Hoosier Horsepower Classic in Indianapolis. Bessong competed in both the 60m and 200m events at the two-day meet, earning top-five finishes in both. In the 60m, Bessong qualified for the finals with the fourth fastest time in the prelims of 7.56. She would go on to finish fourth in Saturday's final. It was her performance in the 200m that solidified her status as A-10 Rookie of the Week, as she finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 24.28, the third-fastest mark in program history.
Bessong continues to be one of the fastest runners in the conference, her PRs ranking third among A-10 athletes in the 60m and second in the 200m.
Bessong and the rest of the Flyers will be back on the track on Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville. You can catch Dayton's throwers in action this weekend at the Crossroads of America Invitational at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
