DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton baseball seniors Burny Mitchem and Bobby Glover signed professional contracts over the weekend, making it a total of four 2012 Flyers who are currently playing professionally.
Mitchem, Dayton’s all-time career strikeout leader, signed an undrafted free agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and has reported for extended Spring Training at the reigning World Series Champion’s facility in Jupiter, Fla.
In 2012, the Farmington, Mich., native held a 1.18 earned run average coming out of the bullpen while becoming the first Flyer pitcher to ever record over 300 career strikeouts, finishing with 320. Mitchem was named the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player after earning a win and two saves while guiding UD to its first-ever A-10 tournament title and NCAA Regional automatic bid.
In Dayton’s record book Mitchem ranks second in career wins (24), first in career strikeouts (320), first in career appearances (88), second in career saves (14) and third in single-season saves (7 in 2012).
Glover signed with the Windy City (Chicago) Thunderbolts of the independent Frontier League. Having already played two games with the Thunderbolts, the Fort Wayne, Ind. native is 2-for-8 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Glover was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference and Team MVP after hitting .322 and ranking among the top five in the A-10 in hits (82), runs scored (58), homeruns (9) and total bases (131). Glover was UD’s starting centerfielder in 118 of the last 119 games.
Senior right-handed pitcher Mike Hauschild (33rd-round draft pick) and senior shortstop Brian Blasik (undrafted free agent) signed with the Houston Astros on June 11.
