BLUE TOPS RED IN FLYERS' ANNUAL RED & BLUE GAME

Oct. 22, 2005

DAYTON, Ohio - The UD men's basketball team held an open scrimmage for the Flyer Faithful with Saturday's annual Red & Blue game. About 3,000 fans watched at UD Arena as the Blue team won both halves, taking the first half 41-33, and the second 38-19. Brian Roberts (pictured) scored 29 points total, and Monty Scott added 22 points in the contest.

"We had a great turnout today which was tremendous. You just can't say enough about our fans," head coach Brian Gregory said. "This is the first time we've played in front of people this year, and that's a benefit for our freshmen. We did some good things today. We should be a good shooting team if the right guys are shooting the ball. Now is when guys start separating themselves in practice."

With the teams playing four eight minute quarters and resetting the score at the half, Blue took the first half, by a score of 41-33. A trio of players had six points for Blue - Warren Williams, Charles Little, and Normal Plummer. Williams added five assists against no turnovers. Assistant coach Billy Schmidt guided the Blue team with the aid of Bob Beyer.

Brian Gregory and assistant coach Reggie Rankin's Red team - wearing their alternate white jerseys - were led by Roberts and Chris Alvarez, with seven points each. The Blue defense forced eight Red turnovers, while the Red team out-rebounded Blue 19-17.

The first half was a close contest featuring 10 lead changes until the last three minutes, when Blue used a 6-0 surge to take the lead for good. Scott ignited the crowd with a baseline dunk for the Blue team. Scott had eight points total and Plummer combined for 10 points as each split time between the two teams.

In the second half, Blue jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one quarter of play. Scott's three pulled white within three points with five minutes to go at 22-19, but after a free throw, Roberts made a lay-up in transition to start a 15-0 run as Blue coasted home, 38-19.

Williams finished 11 assists and two turnovers. Binnie was the leading rebounder with nine, Plummer and Nick Stafford each added eight rebounds while Chris Alvarez, James Cripe and Logan White each added seven.

The Dayton basketball will continue practice before the first exhibition game on November 5, 2005 against Central State.
