Hilton Head, SC - UD men's tennis lost another close one on Wednesday evening as the Denison Big Red came away with a 4-3 decision. With the loss, the Flyers lost their third match in a row and fell back to .500 on the season at 7-7 overall.
Without Tom Murphy (10-2 in singles play) in the lineup due to a sore shoulder, the team may have lost a pivotal point in the match. The Flyers were able to get wins from the number one and two spots, but were unable to grab a point after that. Sophomore James O'Connell filled in nicely at first singles and took his match over Jordan Buehler 6-3, 6-2. Junior Rex Cabrera also moved up a spot and notched a win at second singles over Jimmy Vogelgesang 6-3, 6-1.
While UD struggled in singles play, the team ran the table on the Big Red on the doubles front. Murphy, who was able to play doubles, teamed up with senior Jamison Downs as the tandem picked up their eighth win of the season 8-5 over Lofgren/Newman. Cabrera and O'Connell also won their eight match of the season as a duo defeating Messick/Buehler 8-3. At third doubles, Cabrera played again with freshman David Peyton as they took their match 8-5 over Davis/Arenstein.
The Flyers, 2-7 on the road this season, will be looking forward to their next match when the team returns home to Dayton Center Courts for the first time since February 25 (UD is 5-0 on their home turf thus far). The St. Bonaventure Bonnies will be in town on Saturday for an 11:00 AM first serve.
