A balanced offense led Dayton past Tulane, 3-1 (30-16, 30-21, 28-30, 30-22) on Friday in the opening match of the Diet Coke Classic. Five Flyers tallied at least eight kills on the night as Dayton out hit Tulane .282 to .155. Sophomore middle blocker Bethany Akerhielm led the way with a .333 hitting percentage and 15 kills to go along with four blocks.
Senior All-America candidate Faye Barhorst hit .423 with 13 kills and five blocks while Jamie-Lee Richards recorded a .391 hitting percentage and 10 kills to round out a trio of UD players with double-figures in kills.
Junior Robynne Green was a factor throughout the match with nine kills, three service aces and a career-high 10 blocks as UD dominated the front line with 16.0 blocks to 4.0 for the Green Wave.
Sophomore Nicole Bateman posted 15 digs and eight kills as three Flyers had at least 10 digs in the match. Junior libero Adrienne Green led all Flyers with 18 digs while Erin Schroeder added 13 digs and 44 assists.
