CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Dayton Flyers softball team lost in the final game of the UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 6-0.
The Flyers, who have scored five runs or more in their last three games were shut out by SDSU and pitcher Jenna Marston. UD had five hits in the game, a mark they have achieved in every outing this season.
Erin Lafayette pitched five innings in the contest, striking out three batters on 24 batters faced, but falling to 0-3 in the season. Freshman Emily Stegeman doubled in two straight games on Sunday.
Senior leader Laura Matthews had a big day for the Flyers. In the first game she drove in three RBI's while going 3-for-4 and in the game against the Jackrabbits, Matthews went 2-of-3 at the plate.
"Laura Matthews did great today," said Clark. "She had key hits in key situations, but the one thing you don't see in the box score is how solid she is behind the plate. She is a real leader on the field."
The Jacks were led behind a 3-for-3 effort by Brittany Postma that included two RBI's. Marston had six strikeouts in a complete game against the Flyers.
"Overall we are excited about getting more experience," said Clark. "We are getting games in much earlier than last season and that is giving us valuable experience. We look to regroup and get back on track for Georgia State."
Dayton will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on February 23 and 24 for the Georgia State Tournament which will pit them against Vermont, Tennessee State and tournament host Georgia State. Opening pitch will be at 10 a.m. ET against the Vermont Catamounts on the 23.
