RICHMOND, Ky. - The University of Dayton Flyers softball team picked up their third win in four games after knocking off the Cleveland State Vikings 8-3 at Gertrude Hood Field on Sunday.
Dayton had an explosive effort at the plate today. Molly Meyer went 3-of-4 and Mollie Schrank, Blair Crabtree and Anne Maci all went 2-of-3 for the Flyers.
Meyer's performance was coupled with two runs and one RBI. Schrank netted two runs and Crabtree picked up one run. Maci's performance was highlighted by her ability to drive home runners, scoring three RBI's in the contest against CSU.
"The top of our lineup was key," coach Cara Clark said, "Meyer had a big two-out double, but really we were consistent through the entire order today."
UD was able to close out another win courtesy of Eva Rappe. In 1.2 innings pitched, Rappe came in and pitched a shut out to seal the victory for the Flyers. In addition, Rappe now holds the single-season record for saves with two after tallying both of them in back-to-back games for Dayton.
"Eva's ability to pitch two scoreless innings was the key for us today," Clark said.
Erin Lafayette picked up her second win of the season (2-3) shutting out the opposition and recording three strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched.
Dayton continued its knack for getting runs early putting up four runs on the Vikings in the first inning. The Flyers have outscored their opponents 16-1 in the first inning through the first ten contests this season.
Maci got the party rolling with a single up the middle driving home both Schrank and Meyer. Laura Matthews brought Maci around and collected her third double of the season in the first inning. Megan Lee's single then brought Matthews home for Dayton's first four runs of the game.
The Flyers continued to pour it on in the fourth inning. Meyer doubled down the right field line to bring home LaFayette. Later in the inning, with two runners on base the Schrank nabbed second base while Meyer stole home bringing home UD's sixth run. Crabtree's double brought Schrank home and Maci's double to left centerfield brought home Crabtree giving Dayton the 8-0 advantage.
CSU's offense was held scoreless until the top of the fifth when they ripped a solo homerun. In the sixth inning they mustered two more runs but fell short at the hands of Eva Rappe who picked up the save by keeping the Vikings offense off balance in the last frame.
Dayton is back in action at 1:30 p.m. ET against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. For the latest results and statistics visit www.DaytonFlyers.com.
